Purchasing a security camera tends to be simple. The real difficulty comes when deciding on placement, attachment technique and the mounting style that ensures stability along with weather resistance and proper positioning. These problems often surface only after an error like drilling in the wrong location.

I have set up cameras across many surface types using standard mounting approaches. The variations in durability and performance exceed what most guides typically cover. Below I share what has proven effective, what falls short and how I would adjust the process if beginning again.

So, which camera mount is best?

Top mounts balance flexibility with consistent performance under different conditions. My top choices involve screw-in or wired bases that include magnetic connectors, allowing quick repositioning or removal of the camera. Examples include Google Nest models, specialized Arlo magnetic mounts and select Tapo cameras. Standard screw-in bases provide their own strengths, while wireless shelf mounts offer flexibility that is difficult to match.

Adhesive mounts or light bulb socket versions tend to restrict placement options more severely. I will review each type in turn to clarify these differences.

Screw-in wall bases

Screw-in bases secure a camera platform to a wall using a pair of screws, after which the camera attaches to the platform and can be angled as needed. This straightforward method suits outdoor installations well, particularly for wireless models, though it also works on indoor surfaces. The base stays secure during storms and holds up against other weather factors.

The main challenge is selecting an appropriate location and surface material. Drilling into stucco often requires special hardware and risks damage. Fiber cement siding on my home cannot be drilled, which rules out many ideal spots. Solutions involve locating siding, eaves or fence posts made of nonstructural wood that accept screws safely.

Screw-in base with magnetic mount

A variation uses a magnetic connection rather than a mechanical latch. The Nest outdoor floodlight demonstrates this approach, and Tapo along with other brands offer similar designs.

This style ranks as my preferred screw-in option. Cameras detach easily for cleaning or minor angle tweaks. The drawback is that wind or extended time may cause slight shifts, requiring occasional realignment.

Wired-in mounts

Wireless outdoor cameras generally allow greater placement freedom. Still, wired-in options connect directly to household electrical wiring and appear often with floodlight models, larger dome cameras, PoE units and comparable devices.

These eliminate battery concerns yet stop working during power outages. Installation involves replacing the base and connecting multiple wires, which requires comfort with electrical work plus access to a junction box. This limits use to areas where existing fixtures are located.

I favor wired solutions for cameras with large light panels that perform poorly on battery power.

Plug-in shelf mounts (indoor)

Typical indoor cameras plug into a nearby outlet via a short cable. Setup requires only an available shelf or table and no additional tools.

This approach stays limited to indoor use unless specialized outdoor-rated cables are added. It is inexpensive and basic, yet selecting the precise outlet and shelf position in advance helps, especially with models that include pan or tilt functions.

Wireless shelf mounts

A less common shelf mount supports battery-powered wireless cameras. Certain Nest indoor or outdoor models pair with stands that allow charging without constant connection.

The Ring Outdoor Cam Plus offers table or shelf mounts plus a built-in battery. This setup permits easy relocation between rooms or outdoor areas while retaining the option for more permanent installation.

Adhesive sticker mounts

Some bases rely on double-sided adhesive rather than screws. These 3M-style pads are strong for outdoor conditions, yet they do not suit most security cameras well.

Outdoor models are often heavy, and adhesive alone tends to fail over time due to weight and weather exposure. They also need smooth, clean surfaces such as metal or glass and cannot adhere reliably to siding, concrete, wood or stone. Adhesive works best with lightweight cameras, and many kits still include screw alternatives.

Light bulb mounts

Light bulb mounts screw into existing sockets such as porch fixtures. While convenient in theory, this option ranks lowest in my experience.

These cameras are inexpensive yet usually lack advanced features and image quality. They replace a functional light with a less effective spotlight and restrict viewing angles to what the socket position allows. They suit only minor, simple additions where complex systems are not desired.

What about solar panel add-ons?

Wireless outdoor cameras can often accept compatible solar panels to reduce battery changes. Proper panel angle is essential, and some models integrate the panel directly.

Installation adds effort and effectiveness varies by climate. For sunny locations this remains a worthwhile consideration.
