Geothermal energy holds enormous promise, offering at least 42 terawatts of global capacity according to the IEA - more than double worldwide energy consumption from last year.

The approach is emerging as an under-the-radar contender in clean power despite receiving far less backing than advanced nuclear or fusion ventures.

This context highlights the significance of the $19 million seed round secured by Critical Energy. The company intends to address a key shortfall by producing factory-built modular turbines optimized for geothermal use. Proceeds will support construction of its initial 2.5 megawatt installation, the firm shared exclusively.

While nuclear projects eye initial commercial runs in the early 2030s, geothermal developers could already be scaling to gigawatt-level plants.

"Geothermal will reach that milestone much sooner," said Spencer Jackson, co-founder and CEO. "Within four or five years we aim to deliver multiple gigawatts annually."

Even limited growth in geothermal could help meet surging electricity demand, particularly from data centers. One analysis projected that enhanced geothermal might supply nearly two-thirds of new facilities by 2030.

Jackson noted an impending shortfall of suitable turbines, as many projects still rely on oversized units requiring lengthy on-site assembly. Factory production offers clear advantages in speed and cost.

Drawing from his background at SpaceX on projects including Falcon Heavy, Starship, and the Raptor engine, Jackson is guiding development of compact modular turbines. Critical Energy partners with machine shops for core turbomachinery resembling rocket components while sourcing remaining elements externally for now.

The debut facility using these turbines is slated for completion in 2027 at an established geothermal location akin to sites in Iceland or Northern California. A larger 5 megawatt design is also underway for deeper enhanced geothermal applications.

Jackson targets gigawatt-scale turbine production by the early 2030s, with a longer-term objective of reaching 300 gigawatts yearly by 2045.

Although geothermal work continues steadily, Jackson anticipates greater involvement from oil and gas firms once the technology matures, accelerating deployment through their drilling expertise.

"The sector excels at repeatable drilling at massive scale, yet it will require turbines amid a likely supply crunch," he added.

The seed financing was led by Susa Ventures and Upfront Ventures, joined by MaC Venture Capital, Susquehanna Sustainable Investments, Humba Ventures, Scribble Ventures, and Underground Ventures. An additional $3 million in venture debt from Silicon Valley Bank brought total early funding to $22 million.
