Elon Musk has announced plans to distribute one SpaceX share to every child in America during 2027. At the current price of $146 per share for the spaceflight and artificial intelligence company, the total gift would surpass $10 billion. This amount represents about 1 percent of his estimated $1 trillion net worth.

The method for carrying out the distribution remains unclear. In a separate message, Musk indicated he intends to transfer the shares directly to the public and described the effort as the first in a series of donations.

President Donald Trump, whom Musk supported with roughly $300 million during the election, has established special Treasury accounts for children known as Trump Accounts. These accounts can receive stock contributions from major donors.

Musk did not reply right away to a request for further details.

Musk shared his statement hours after Anthropic revealed plans to place 5 percent of its shares into a new public benefit fund. The fund aims to support large gifts to established nonprofits or direct aid to particular groups following the company's planned initial public offering.

On Sunday afternoon, Musk responded on X to Anthropic's announcement about the fund and proposed giving shares directly to the public instead. Four hours later he stated this approach is what he will follow, and overnight he detailed his intent to donate SpaceX stock.

More than 70 million children under age 18 currently live in the United States, according to the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics. Musk holds about 849 million Class A common shares of SpaceX along with more than 5.5 billion Class B supervoting shares, and he is positioned to receive additional shares in the future.

Musk has conducted nearly all of his charitable giving through the Musk Foundation. Despite his expressed reservations about philanthropy, the foundation ranks as the fifth-largest private charitable organization in the country. A recent analysis by The Economist found that most funds distributed by the Musk Foundation over time have gone to organizations connected to Musk. Nearly 60 percent has supported another charity called The Foundation, which is managed by his financial advisor Jared Birchall.
