DoorDash is introducing a drone delivery effort named DoorDash Air. As the top food delivery platform in the United States, the firm announced receipt of Federal Aviation Administration clearance that paves the path for drone operations in coming periods.

The company noted it obtained a Part 135 air carrier certification from the FAA, allowing small package transport by drone. Comparable firms holding this status include Alphabet's Wing, Zipline, and Amazon.

DoorDash had earlier collaborated with Alphabet's Wing unit on test programs in areas such as Dallas-Fort Worth, Virginia, and Australia. It now plans to roll out its own aircraft tailored for meal transport. These units will be created and built inside the DoorDash Labs unit, which oversees robotics and AI efforts behind its Dot sidewalk robots.

The firm stated it is crafting an aircraft tailored to address shortfalls in local commerce, working alongside partner designs for varied ranges. The drone is American-designed and assembled, with most parts sourced domestically. (Note that the bulk of drones worldwide are produced in China.)

DoorDash also intends to develop all ground support systems needed for restaurants to transfer orders to drones. Similar to prior drone tests, this requires structures and gear for payload pickup, plus flight routing, airspace coordination, and delivery handling. The company commits to managing this full setup internally.

The aircraft draws attention, yet the firm emphasizes ground infrastructure and integration as the greater challenge and its strength. It focuses on physical issues for local businesses, including inventory tracking and handoff solutions for various merchant setups. This creates a full end-to-end process.

Drone delivery may address midrange trips of three to five miles that often extend wait times due to courier availability. Such orders represent over 20 percent of volume yet average nearly 25 percent longer than shorter ones, mainly from delays in assigning couriers.

Assigning these trips to drones allows Dashers to handle preferred short routes near merchant clusters, improving efficiency and earnings through quicker connections to subsequent tasks.
