Like other major streamers, Disney Plus is facing increasing competition from free-to-watch services like YouTube.

Disney is considering the launch of a free streaming option. During an earnings call on Wednesday, CEO Josh D’Amaro confirmed the company is exploring a free product for consumers.

D’Amaro noted that a free tier could support growth by reaching a more price-sensitive audience. While he said there is nothing specific to announce at this time, he emphasized that the idea is under serious consideration.

In July, Business Insider reported that Disney’s chief product and technology officer, Adam Smith, raised the possibility of a free tier during a company town hall. Streaming services such as Disney Plus, Netflix, and HBO Max now compete with YouTube, which has introduced 24/7 Stations and organized video seasons to resemble traditional television.

Next year, Disney plans to expand the Disney Plus ecosystem to position it as the company’s digital centerpiece. This includes integrating games, merchandise, and other experiences along with greater personalization and subscriber benefits, according to D’Amaro. The company also announced a partnership with TikTok to feature Disney-centric fan-created content in the short-form video feed within Disney Plus.
