Industry watchers have tracked the AI memory crunch for months. The effects are now reaching store shelves. Currys, the UK's largest consumer electronics retailer, has cautioned that prices for phones, laptops and TVs are set to climb later this year.

Chief executive Alex Baldock shared the outlook with journalists following the release of annual results, according to Reuters. He noted that AI systems and data centres are consuming global silicon supplies, leaving less for everyday buyers.

Retailer serves as market indicator

Currys offers a reliable snapshot of trends. Operating like a UK version of Best Buy with outlets in Britain, Ireland and Nordic countries, the group sees clear signals on pricing. Those signals point to upward pressure ahead.

"Fewer components remain available for items such as mobile phones and laptops," Baldock explained. This situation "will lead to supply constraints and some upward movement in costs later this year." He declined to specify the scale of increases, citing uncertainty at this stage.

Stockpiling provides temporary buffer

The retailer is taking steps to manage the issue. Baldock highlighted its scale as a buyer to lock in inventory and soften price hikes. The company has also purchased ahead of need. "We have secured forward orders to maintain reliable supply for computing and mobile devices through at least September," he stated.

That protection ends in the fall, after which shortages are expected to intensify. Currys joins other companies raising concerns. Apple has increased some prices, while Xbox units have also seen rises. Experts anticipate the pressure will grow before easing.

Production shifts to AI clients

The root cause is straightforward. Memory producers have redirected output toward large AI operators including Meta, Google and Amazon. Consumer electronics firms must compete for remaining stock. The strain has affected even long-established chip types and supported Micron's rise to a trillion-dollar valuation. Lower-cost Chinese DRAM may offer some relief, though volumes remain limited so far.

The announcement coincided with a separate EU-backed study warning that export restrictions, dependence on US tech and other structural issues could hinder Europe's chip sector. The report urged faster development of local capacity. Currys' alert reflects the consumer side of these broader supply challenges.

Profits rise yet shares dip

Financial results showed resilience. Currys reported adjusted pre-tax profit of £191mn alongside a 6 per cent revenue increase to £9.25bn. Comparable sales grew 3 per cent in the UK and Ireland and 6 per cent in the Nordics. Major events boosted demand, with 90-inch-plus TV sales tripling during the football World Cup and heatwave conditions spurring purchases of cooling products.

Investors reacted by lowering the share price 3.3 per cent, though the stock remains up 25.6 per cent for the year. Leadership is also changing. Baldock, who led the turnaround, departs on 31 August to head Boots. Nordic operations chief Fredrik Tønnesen will succeed him and must address the memory shortage now affecting European consumers.
