Researchers have long sought to understand how children acquire language with remarkable speed, and a recent investigation from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology may have uncovered a key element: curiosity.

The team created a virtual robot featuring a neural network modeled on the brain and placed it inside a simulated three-dimensional environment containing shapes, colors, and basic instructions such as push left magenta dumbbell.

One group of robots received rewards solely for accurate task completion. A second group gained additional rewards for curiosity, receiving an internal boost each time they met something that tested their current model of the surroundings.

How does curiosity help a robot learn language?

The curious robots did more than outperform the others; they advanced far ahead. The study, released in Science Advances, showed that these robots achieved solid language comprehension in roughly half the usual duration.

Author Theodore Tinker likened the process to sampling white chocolate despite a preference for dark chocolate. The willingness to explore still yields broader knowledge about the subject overall.

Halfway through training the curious robots began toppling objects and testing unrequested actions, essentially engaging in play. No code instructed this conduct; it emerged naturally.

Do robots really make the same mistakes as toddlers?

The robots also reproduced a familiar pattern seen in child language development. Young learners often handle certain verbs correctly at first, then overapply rules and err on previously mastered forms before finally mastering exceptions. The robots displayed the same temporary decline followed by recovery.

This approach differs from current chatbots. Large language models rely on vast data to predict the next word statistically. The robot instead maintains accuracy and stable beliefs, revising them only when new information proves sufficiently surprising.

The findings do not imply robots grasp language exactly as humans do. They do indicate that curiosity combined with diverse experiences may explain how toddlers master language despite limited input.
