As audio-focused generative tools and platforms have advanced in capability, the web has grown crowded with algorithmically created tracks whose tunes and voices draw directly from human creators. While some producers openly admit to relying on these systems, others have rejected the notion until mounting public pressure compelled them to acknowledge it.

For musicians working in tech-heavy genres such as electronic dance music, the blurred line between authentic and synthetic work feels especially pressing. Professional norms add another layer of difficulty, since fans may flag suspected AI use, yet fellow artists often hesitate to question their peers. A few, including 26-year-old EDM producer Max Harris, have chosen to speak out through videos that highlight tracks they believe pass AI output off as human work.

Harris views AI-generated music as a hollow substitute that lacks genuine expression. He argues that real art stems from creators aiming to convey emotions and ideas, whereas those pushing generative tools primarily seek fast financial gain. He does not regard AI material as art and sees the technology as enabling theft of existing works rather than fostering progress.

Originally from Maine, Harris approaches composition much like other creative fields. He starts with a central idea, then layers additional concepts until one resonates. His setup features Ableton Live, a Novation Launchkey 49 controller, Ableton Push 3, Launchpad X, analog synthesizers, Serum, Diva, and Kontakt, yet he describes the workflow as a series of personal creative choices that shape the final sound.

Each choice among the hundreds required per track moves the piece closer to a desired feeling or concept, after which further decisions refine the mix for clarity and impact. In his eyes, authentic artistry involves informed experimentation drawn from deep knowledge of the medium, something generative systems often bypass by removing the need for users to grasp how elements combine.

Harris also laments how AI-generated tracks distort listeners' sense of what human-made EDM should sound like. He notes a persistent sharp hiss in many such songs, likely resulting from models beginning with white noise and then approximating waveforms from training data. He cites tracks like MANSA's Midnight on My Mind and Danny and Ian Asher's Take Me (To The Moon) as examples that display traits he associates with AI production, though no public confirmation exists and he acknowledges the possibility of error.

Harris attributes much of the recent surge in AI uploads to Suno, yet he also credits platform-specific quirks with aiding detection. Vocals and melodies in many Suno outputs tend to stutter simultaneously, a flaw he attributes to incomplete separation of song components during training. Such artifacts strike him as decisions no experienced human producer would make.

Visual cues sometimes reinforce his suspicions as well. In videos from evangelical AI persona Lionsaddle, fingers appear and disappear, while Christian house artist Midnite Manna's clips display an overly polished sheen typical of machine-generated imagery.

Italian producer Nihil Young, aged 39, has also drawn attention to Suno use in EDM. His Threads commentary prompted Harris to begin his own videos. Young has observed several newcomers gaining traction with tracks he suspects were created via AI, and he felt compelled to comment despite usually avoiding online debates.

Young maintains that many such songs simply remix copyrighted material from established artists through the platform. He warns that the same process could target any creator's catalog. Following his posts, he faced hacking attempts and harassment, and he believes fake followers were used to inflate his own streaming numbers, prompting him to pause public callouts while still emphasizing the broader harm to working musicians.

Young reports losing mixing and mastering clients to AI shortly after its wider rollout, affecting income that once came largely from production work. He notes that tools like Suno's Simple Mode let users generate full songs by picking a genre and pressing a button, requiring minimal creative input. He doubts that many posters craft detailed prompts themselves.

Despite resistance from traditional artists, AI tracks have entered mainstream channels. Metro Boomin sampled an AI-generated beat for a response to Drake that later appeared on a Billboard-charting release. Entirely synthetic songs have also charted on TikTok and Billboard lists, and one label offered a multimillion-dollar deal to an AI avatar. Industry estimates suggest top AI music creators earned millions last year, while platforms report AI uploads exceeding half of new submissions, making avoidance difficult even as detection remains uncertain.

Young believes attentive listening with quality headphones reveals AI artifacts, yet many consumers treat music as background audio through phone speakers and show little interest in distinguishing sources. He urges listeners to seek out human creators regardless.
