Shortly after installing the initial developer preview of iPadOS 26 on a test device to avoid issues on primary hardware, I discovered a distinctive opportunity for Apple to deliver superior AI experiences. Launching the Shortcuts application, I added a fresh routine and entered a command to message Anna with three affectionate emojis. This routine occurs occasionally to signal affection to my spouse. Within moments powered by Apple Intelligence, the routine activated, allowing a single tap to deliver the emojis correctly.

Apple Shortcuts has represented a strong concept hampered by an overly intricate setup process. It serves as a robust mechanism enabling users to build visual automations that execute tasks seamlessly across applications. Yet even basic routines often prove tricky and unreliable, with the interface offering little guidance. Delivering reliable performance demands extensive effort. Partial success equates to outright shortcomings. Apple must rapidly encourage broad developer adoption of App Intents so users can replicate nearly any in-app action via shortcuts. This poses challenges, as many creators may resist features that reduce direct app engagement. Should adoption lag, AI systems may need to interpret varied APIs and schemes independently, echoing broader hurdles in agent-based AI approaches.

Apple's additional natural-language platform appears simpler to refine. Alongside AI-driven Safari tab management, the updates support creating browser extensions through descriptive commands. Entering phrases like "convert page to Markdown link" generates the extension instantly. Basic trials succeeded easily, though they lack AI capabilities or cross-app links, limiting uses mainly to site customizations. The underlying idea remains consistent: enabling personalized device adjustments without full redevelopment.

Apple devoted significant keynote time to features promoting reduced device usage, especially for younger users. Facilitating repeated tasks more efficiently supports this goal. Individuals maintain unique phone habits involving repeated app switches, gestures, and data transfers across disconnected elements. The AI sector seeks superior alternatives through unified platforms where requests alone trigger actions, often aiming for dominant super-app ecosystems.

Apple already possesses such a foundation in the iPhone. Should these features achieve consistent operation, a substantial challenge remains, the company could apply new technologies to enhance existing workflows rather than overhaul them entirely.
