Apple's initial iPhone Air highlighted one clear point: consumers adore ultra-thin phones until concerns about battery endurance arise. This compromise has shadowed nearly every slim smartphone, and it appears Apple aims to avoid repeating past issues.

A modest battery addition yields significant benefits

A recent report from reliable source Digital Chat Station indicates the next-generation iPhone Air, anticipated for spring 2027, might include a 3,500mAh battery. This represents about an 11 percent increase compared to the existing model's 3,149mAh capacity. While not a huge leap on paper, iPhone battery performance relies heavily on optimizations beyond raw size. Apple has long maximized runtime from smaller cells via efficient hardware and software tweaks. That extra 11 percent could deliver even greater real-world gains if overall efficiency improves too. The key question remains how Apple will create the necessary space.

A bigger battery need not result in a thicker device. The firm might rearrange internal components, employ a higher-density cell, or optimize existing room more effectively. Reports also point to potential adoption of Samsung's latest CoE OLED display tech, which thins the screen assembly. Any space saved could then support a modestly larger battery while preserving the phone's exact dimensions.

The challenge of balance becomes more complex

Battery capacity is not the sole expected improvement. Multiple sources suggest Apple plans to include a second rear camera on the iPhone Air, probably an ultra-wide lens. This would address a noted limitation of the current single-camera design when compared to standard iPhone models. Yet fitting an additional camera into a tight internal layout is no easy task, as each part vies for limited room. Achieving a larger battery alongside this upgrade would be a notable feat if successful.

Timing could also favor Apple. The expected A20 chip, built on a 2nm process, promises improved power efficiency over prior versions. Combined with increased battery size, the iPhone Air 2 might provide clearly better endurance while keeping its signature slim profile. The device is still slated for the first half of 2027, alongside the standard iPhone 18 and the budget iPhone 18e. Should these details hold true, Apple could demonstrate that thin phones need not always involve battery trade-offs.
