The iPhone 17 narrowed the differences between Apple's basic model and higher-priced Pro versions last year thanks to long-awaited screen enhancements plus useful camera and toughness boosts. Apple extended capabilities such as Center Stage along with Dual Capture to every device in the range, boosting the iPhone 17's appeal as a strong option.

Twelve months on, it stands as the lowest-priced entry-level flagship among major brands after Samsung and Google increased costs on their base models amid rising RAM expenses tied to AI and data center demands.

August often brings advice to skip new iPhone purchases and hold out for the latest version. Yet the situation appears altered in 2026.

With the next iPhone reveal set for September 9 drawing nearer, the iPhone 17 continues to perform well versus Android competitors. It must hold its own against fresh devices until March 2027 because the iPhone 18 is not expected until then along with the iPhone 18E per reports.

So if a new iPhone is needed before March or if spending $1,100 or higher on an iPhone 18 Pro does not appeal, I powered up my iPhone 17 and reviewed Apple's standard model this week to assess whether it remains a solid buy.

Screen, toughness and camera changes maintain its edge

The iPhone 17 launched last year with several key improvements that deliver daily benefits.

The display now matches Apple's Pro models and other Android options. It supports a fluid 120Hz refresh rate that adjusts based on content to preserve power. Side-by-side with the iPhone 15, the smoother motion stood out right away during home screen navigation. This makes the device seem quicker and more reactive.

The screen also offers greater brightness and reduced glare compared to the prior version. The difference shows clearly outdoors or under strong lighting. Matched against the new Pixel 11, which matches the brightness, the iPhone 17's tighter borders create a more attractive viewing area.

Apple claimed its 2025 phones offered top durability. Although I have not used the iPhone 17 daily for a full year, I have carried the iPhone 17 Pro Max without a case for 10 months. Relative to my 2024 iPhone 16 Pro, the 17 Pro resisted scratches and falls better due to its Ceramic Shield 2 glass, also used on the iPhone 17.

While some may see it as small, the 17's front camera ranks as the finest improvement. The new 18-megapixel square sensor provides practical benefits beyond the resolution increase by allowing landscape selfies without turning the phone. The preview adjusts framing automatically depending on the number of subjects.

I value the camera for two main reasons. It supports Center Stage, which follows the user during video calls on FaceTime and apps like WhatsApp even during movement. This proves useful while handling tasks, keeping the frame steady and reducing distractions for others.

Next, the square sensor enhances stability during selfie video. Living with hand tremors makes self-recording challenging on phones, yet the iPhone 17 reduces concerns and delivers steadier results instead of shaky clips.

The two rear cameras outperform the previous model. The iPhone 17 features a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens, improving on the 12-megapixel ultrawide from the iPhone 16. Expect clear images, stronger low-light performance and fluid video. It lacks the telephoto lens on the 17 Pro, so no optical zoom, yet these cover needs for most users.

iOS 26 shows issues - I anticipate iOS 27

The iPhone 17 uses iOS 26 with more see-through controls, customization tools and Apple Intelligence options. Still, my experience included glitches from the start. I missed calls and alarms multiple times when the phone dropped system volume to the lowest level without any Do Not Disturb or Focus setting active. At other moments the keyboard lagged suddenly, and accessing Control Center during landscape video playback scattered the controls.

Many problems have been addressed in the iOS 27 Public Beta running on my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Now separate volume settings exist for ringer, alarms and media. Control Center works better in horizontal view and keeps custom layouts intact. Additional smart tools include spatial reframing in Photos that uses generative AI to adjust apparent camera position in shots, plus a fresh Siri mode inside the Camera app.

In CNET's 45-minute test covering streaming, social media scrolling, video calls and gaming, the base iPhone dropped from full to 98 percent, matching the iPhone 17 Pro. It ties for second-longest battery life among phones tested by CNET in the past year alongside the OnePlus 15 and Motorola Razr (2026), trailing only the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Yet later iOS 26 updates and regular use affected battery performance on my own iPhone 17 with increased overnight drain. This makes the coming iOS 27 update appealing, as the beta suggests gains in features and reliability.

It has performed well, yet what lies ahead in six months?

The standard model compares favorably with rivals. The iPhone 17 started at $799, $100 below the $899 Samsung Galaxy S26 and new Google Pixel 11. With prices climbing industry-wide and rumors of higher iPhone costs, the current iPhone 17 pricing offers value for an upgrade.

Those key improvements justify the $799 cost, though it may shift soon when Apple unveils the iPhone 18 Pro and its initial foldable iPhone Ultra.

While the iPhone 18 is slated for next year, the Pro line may see price increases that widen the gap between base and premium models.

To offset this, Apple might raise the base iPhone price even before the iPhone 18 arrives. This remains speculation drawn from recent pricing moves on other products. The base iPhone has stayed at $799 since 2020, and following increases on Macs, iPads and more, lifting the entry price appears logical now.

For those considering a wait for the iPhone 18, major changes like a smaller Dynamic Island and updated cameras are likely reserved for Pro versions. A recent Weibo report indicates the iPhone 18 may align closer to a lower-cost iPhone 18E model and might not include as powerful a chip as the Pro models, similar to Google's approach with the base Pixel 11 and budget Pixel 10A.

Given the modest rumors around the next model and the iPhone 17's current price along with possible future increases, last year's version remains a strong choice. For the first time, I would recommend buying the iPhone 17 now if a new device is needed before September 9 rather than waiting to see the 18 Pro.
