Anthropic's abrupt decision to cut off access to its latest AI models after a U.S. government order has prompted new discussions throughout the technology sector. In India, this step has revived longstanding conversations about whether one of the biggest AI markets worldwide can continue depending on systems created and managed outside its borders.

The statement arrived late Friday, with Anthropic noting it had been instructed by U.S. authorities to block access to its newly released Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for every foreign national, including its own overseas staff. This followed closely after the firm revealed a collaboration with Indian IT leader Tata Consultancy Services aimed at boosting enterprise AI use in India, highlighting how tightly the nation's AI goals are linked to tools developed under U.S. oversight.

Although wider effects are still uncertain, some accounts indicated that initial security issues were flagged to officials by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Reports from The Information suggested the White House is not planning comparable limits for other AI firms and is instead attributing the situation to Anthropic's management of reported jailbreak weaknesses. Anthropic has challenged the government's view and maintained that the restriction was unwarranted.

In any case, the event has sparked discussion among Indian entrepreneurs, investors, and policy specialists on whether the country should speed up creation of local AI systems, increase funding for open-source options, or keep depending on a few U.S. leading model developers. Some see it as a prompt to address technological reliance, while others view it as evidence that access to vital AI tools can be influenced by international decisions outside India's reach.

India has emerged as a key market for leading AI organizations. Both Anthropic and OpenAI have called the South Asian country their largest market after the U.S., showing its rising role in worldwide AI competition. The firms have already established offices there, grown local teams, formed partnerships, and launched enterprise programs in recent months, counting on India's large pool of developers, startups, and companies to drive use of their newest tools.

For many in India's technology community, Anthropic's Friday statement went beyond a single company's action. It brought back questions about the nation's long-term AI approach and whether India could risk staying reliant on a limited group of overseas frontier AI suppliers.

"It completely changes things," said Aakrit Vaish, founder of Indian AI venture platform Activate, about Anthropic's choice. "I think this materially changes the way all of us should be thinking about sovereign AI in India."

Vaish explained to TechCrunch that he awoke on Saturday morning "shocked and confused" by the news and noted it bolstered arguments for building domestic AI strengths. He anticipates more startups will shift toward open-source models and intends to advise firms in his portfolio to lessen reliance on a narrow set of frontier AI providers.

For certain founders, the main worry involves how limits on frontier AI access might affect competitiveness. Vijay Rayapati, co-founder and CEO of Atomicwork, told TechCrunch that the situation underscored risks for startups with teams across nations if advanced AI system access grows subject to geopolitical rules.

Atomicwork employs roughly 25 people in the U.S., while most of its product engineering staff works from Bengaluru, India.

"If your AI team is not made up entirely of U.S. citizens, you are at a competitive disadvantage," Rayapati said, contending that uneven access to frontier AI models could provide some firms a notable advantage against competitors.

The issue arises as segments of India's tech industry already face questions on how AI might alter global talent economics. This week, U.S. real estate tech firm Opendoor closed its India office less than two years after entering the market, with CEO Kaz Nejatian pointing to efforts to locate operational work nearer to U.S. customers and a move to smaller AI-native teams.

Although Opendoor did not detail how much AI-driven efficiencies influenced the choice, the closure added to wider talks on how AI progress could shape the future of worldwide technology work and India's standing as an engineering talent center.

Beyond Anthropic

Besides startups and AI creators, the Anthropic event also triggered wider discussion among India's technology leaders regarding reliance on foreign AI infrastructure.

Sridhar Vembu, founder of Indian SaaS company Zoho, stated the action demonstrated that "technology is the ultimate weapon" and called on Indian organizations to adopt smaller and open-source models more widely.

"What can our government do right now? Ensure that orgs in India embrace smaller models, both Indian and Chinese open source ones," Vembu wrote on X.

Investor and former Infosys executive Mohandas Pai replied to Vembu on X, asserting the development underscored the requirement for a much bolder national AI plan and urging the government to raise spending substantially on AI, computing infrastructure, and deep technology.

"We are way behind and need a national mission to get going quickly," Pai wrote, pressing the government to establish an annual ₹500 billion (about $5 billion) fund for AI and deep tech, plus a ₹2 trillion (around $21 billion) credit guarantee scheme to back cloud infrastructure, hardware, and semiconductor growth.

Pai's idea would far exceed India's current AI initiatives. In 2024, New Delhi approved the IndiaAI Mission with spending of ₹103.72 billion (about $1.2 billion) across five years, focused on growing compute resources, aiding startups, and building local AI abilities.

Despite rising interest in AI and New Delhi's drive to strengthen domestic capabilities, India stays a modest participant in frontier model creation. Only a few startups pursue foundational AI models, such as Sarvam, which introduced open-source models earlier this year. Yet another prominent AI startup, Krutrim, shifted focus to cloud and AI infrastructure services after initially centering on foundational model work.

Much of India's AI ecosystem has instead focused on applications and specialized models layered atop existing foundation models. Recent cases include Avataar AI, which introduced a video-generation model earlier this week intended as a lower-cost option compared to offerings from competitors including Google's Veo, Kling, Luma, and Runway.

Not all agree that the core issue is insufficient capital. Responding to Pai's remarks, Lightspeed partner Hemant Mohapatra contended that the primary limits on building globally competitive AI companies involve talent, computing resource access, and execution, rather than merely the scale of investment pledges.

Mohapatra estimated that training a frontier AI model could require anywhere from hundreds of millions to several billion dollars, based on the method, but noted successful AI companies have typically expanded their capital needs gradually as adoption increased.

Yet for some policy observers, the effects reach well beyond AI startups or model providers.

Prasanto Roy, a New Delhi-based technology policy expert who advises multinational companies, said the episode would likely heighten concerns inside the Indian government about strategic autonomy, likening it to lessons many nations learned from Russia's loss of access to SWIFT and other global financial systems after its invasion of Ukraine.

He told TechCrunch that the step would probably trigger a strong nationalist response in India and called it a poorly judged move by Washington, with fallout extending far past Anthropic itself.

"Even if this is corrected or reversed, the Anthropic episode shows there's no such thing as a geopolitically neutral foreign LLM," Roy said. "American AI models are bound to American geopolitics."
