Security cameras focus on facial recognition. Recent studies indicate they could soon target the unique manner in which individuals walk.

A study in the International Journal of Reasoning-based Intelligent Systems introduces SKDMap-Net, a gait recognition tool that identifies individuals based on their walking videos, even without clear facial views. It analyzes body movement across frames rather than depending on close-up images.

This capability offers both benefits and concerns. When a person is distant, sideways, or partially obscured, their gait might suffice for identification. The system achieved 95.8 percent accuracy on a key gait dataset and 83.7 percent Rank-1 accuracy on a challenging real-world dataset.

Why walking patterns enable greater distance

Facial features, fingerprints, and irises share a limitation: they require close and clear captures, which security cameras often lack.

Gait provides more flexibility. Cameras can observe movement without needing the subject to pause in ideal conditions. It examines stride, timing, and limb dynamics.

This explains the ongoing interest in gait recognition for security applications. It supplies an additional identification cue for long-range cameras when faces are unclear, turned away, or too distant.

How the AI interprets movement

SKDMap-Net avoids treating walks as simple silhouettes, as poor angles can distort such outlines quickly.

The system instead identifies key body points and monitors their changes over time. It examines joint flexion, rotation speed, and rhythmic variations in walking.

This approach aids in degraded views. If the lower body is hidden, emphasis shifts to upper body motions. The focus remains on dynamics rather than static form.

Privacy implications

One positive scenario involves cameras handling skeletal data without retaining raw footage, potentially limiting identifiable video circulation.

However, gait remains a behavioral biometric, allowing re-identification even without facial data.

Enhanced long-range capabilities might facilitate tracking of public movements. Strict regulations on data storage, access, and use are essential before gait analysis becomes a standard privacy concern.
