No one requested an AI digest of messages or a virtual helper inside a photo app, yet these tools appeared regardless. The same pattern now affects the monkeys living in Costa Rica's Taboga Forest Reserve. Researchers installed a touchscreen setup that relies on artificial intelligence to examine how wild capuchins reason and adapt while they remain in their home environment.

Monkeys encounter AI through research tools

Unlike many consumer AI tools, this system serves a clear research goal. Emory University scientists created CapuchinAI, a mobile station that includes a touchscreen, camera, and 3D printed treat dispenser housed in wood. Recognition software, trained on local capuchin images, spots an approaching monkey and offers a basic task: tap the display to receive dried banana.

Researchers observed that two days passed before any capuchin neared the station. On day three an alpha male named Papi arrived and quickly grasped the routine. In time ten of the sixteen capuchins that tried the device mastered the action, and at least eight recalled the steps in later visits.

Dr. Marcela Benitez, a primatologist at Emory University, noted that the aim is to watch how primates handle challenges under natural conditions that a laboratory cannot copy.

Next version adds individual tracking

This summer the group will trial an improved unit that recognizes each capuchin rather than the species alone. The updated setup will also run checks on impulse control and mental flexibility while recording each animal's results like a game log. It advances beyond earlier facial recognition used for wild chimpanzees by linking identification to an immediate reward system.

Most people meet AI as an addition to phones, browsers, and messages whether requested or not. The technology now appears in the Costa Rican rainforest as well. Here the new users are wild capuchins pressing a screen for banana pieces during scientific work.
