Samsung could finally move away from reusing the same main camera hardware on its standard Galaxy S phones, a practice that began with the Galaxy S22. Reports indicate that certain Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ prototypes are being evaluated with a fresh 50MP Sony sensor in the primary camera position.

This shift would end Samsung's extended reliance on its own ISOCELL components for the lead cameras in Galaxy S models, even though the resolution count would stay the same.

What could change with the main camera?

The Galaxy S27 and S27+ are still slated to feature a 50MP main camera, yet resolution alone does not capture the full picture. A newer Sony sensor might deliver improved light intake, stronger dynamic range, lower noise levels, and higher-quality raw data for Samsung's image processing pipeline.

Samsung has boosted image quality over multiple generations via refined software, updated processors, and advanced computational methods. However, software enhancements have limits when the base sensor sees little evolution. A new main sensor would mark a meaningful step forward, particularly after earlier indications that the standard Galaxy S27 might retain much of the prior camera setup.

There remains no certainty that the Sony sensor will reach production units. The S27 series is still in early stages, so these plans could shift before launch.

What about the rest of the cameras?

While the main camera may see updates, the ultrawide lens looks set to stay the same. Reports suggest the Galaxy S27 and S27+ will retain a 12MP ultrawide camera. Samsung appears to be reserving larger changes for its premium variants. Earlier information points to the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra gaining 50MP ultrawide and telephoto options, plus a new 16MP selfie camera.

Should these details prove accurate, the standard Galaxy S27 models would gain an improved main camera while other lenses remain familiar. Confirmation will only come with an official announcement, yet this rumor offers more optimism than another cycle of unchanged sensors.
