Adobe revealed yesterday that the mobile edition of Lightroom, now available on iOS, iPadOS, and Android, can open closed eyes in photos using generative AI through a single tap. When the app spots a person or group with closed eyes, it automatically shows a new Open Eyes Quick Action icon over the image for fast access to the tool.

The option to rescue an otherwise strong photo by opening a subject’s eyes has existed in Adobe’s Photoshop Elements for nearly ten years. Yet as DPReview notes, Elements pulls the replacement eyes from another photo of the subject, which can produce uneven results based on differences between the images. Lightroom mobile’s Open Eyes feature instead uses generative AI so the new eyes fit the lighting and pose, while drawing on other shots of the same person in the user’s Lightroom library to match color, size, and shape precisely.

Users can achieve a similar fix in other Adobe apps such as Photoshop with its generative AI tools, but the process is not a one-tap solution and requires payment. Those on the free version of Lightroom mobile can test the Open Eyes feature twice before receiving a prompt to subscribe to an Adobe Creative Cloud plan that supplies extra credits for its AI-powered tools, according to DPReview.
