Kipp Popert is driven by purpose. This 27-year-old Englishman, who leads the global disabled golf rankings, frequently emphasizes one key term: "opportunity." He was stunned to learn from the DP World Tour that its G4D series - featuring a few annual events for disabled athletes from 2022 to 2025 - has been shelved indefinitely.

The G4D Open, gathering 80 golfers with impairments, kicks off Thursday at Celtic Manor. It unfolds far from Pennsylvania and this week's US PGA Championship, where Scottie Scheffler claimed $3.4m (£2.5m) last year. Even the primary stage for these athletes offers no prize money. Popert avoids harsh criticism, opting instead to methodically explain the decision's consequences.

"Kids need to envision a future and find motivation during hard times, which requires top disabled players to compete regularly for their livelihood," Popert states. "The DP World Tour aimed for this, and we are truly thankful. It's disappointing that progress in the sport has halted for now."

"Elite performance drives sports popularity. In able-bodied men's and women's competitions, the top tier generates grassroots opportunities. Inclusivity is vital, yet elite matchups deliver the excitement that attracts sponsorship and broadens appeal."

Regarding the G4D Tour's status, a DP World Tour spokesperson commented: "We are prioritizing two flagship events to maximize exposure for golfers with disabilities. These include the yearly G4D Open, hosted with the R&A, and a new G4D challenge at the 2027 Ryder Cup.

"The G4D Tour was launched to boost participation, and we take pride in the substantial rise in competitive disabled golfers today. G4D now advances into a fresh phase, with diverse partners organizing events.

"Discussions continue with EDGA [European Disabled Golf Association], IGF [International Golf Federation], and R&A to develop a structure that sustains G4D Tour momentum and supports golf's Paralympic aspirations."

Popert remains optimistic about fulfilling his dream of Paralympic inclusion by Brisbane 2032, though he adds a note: "The Paralympics offer an outstanding showcase for disabled sports, but it occurs only every four years.

"Golf was excelling here, courtesy of the DP World Tour. Funding remains challenging, yet sports abound with resources and potential. A century ago, women faced similar barriers. This may involve reallocating existing funds rather than scarcity."

This debate lacks simple answers. The DP World Tour rarely lacks sponsors, evidenced by robust expansion. Tour insiders highlight insufficient competition and talent depth in disabled golf as issues. Popert counters effectively: visibility breeds aspiration. He points to wheelchair user Max Togisala's five-under score at last year's US Adaptive Open, backed by Deloitte with $3,000 stipends per player. Popert has seen blind golfer Kiefer Jones card sub-par rounds repeatedly.

Popert ran his own event Monday, raising £145,000 from businesses so all 18 participants pocketed checks freely. His dedication shines through funding lessons for disabled youth and donating buses to schools. His efforts merit strong support - but is it forthcoming?

"The R&A museum displays images of disabled golfers from 150 years ago," Popert notes. "Countless talents before me lacked chances. I want golf-loving disabled kids to seize opportunities.

"Golf's big push is expanding participation. One in six people lives with a disability, and the sport suits them perfectly; elite play from 100 yards in - with one leg or one arm - can yield under-par scores. This represents genuine growth potential. Without sustainable paths to cover costs, let alone earn a living, can we truly say the game is growing?"

Popert, living with cerebral palsy, has competed in able-bodied tournaments and plans more. "Those circuits aren't built for us," he explains. "Holding a Challenge Tour card demands about 25 events yearly. Though I believe in my ability, I can't manage that volume." For now, options are severely limited.
