La Liga president Javier Tebas has slammed the "complicit silence" enveloping Fifa following the controversial decision to spare United States forward Folarin Balogun from suspension at the 2026 World Cup.

Balogun featured in the 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16 after Fifa's disciplinary panel chose to put his one-match ban on hold for 12 months.

Uefa, long at odds with Fifa on various matters, lambasted the ruling on Monday, labeling it "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable".

Yet beyond Europe, football authorities have remained largely quiet on Fifa's choice.

Conmebol, the South American confederation, released a statement supporting its referee, Raphael Claus, after US president Donald Trump labeled the Brazilian "a bit suspect".

However, it stopped short of criticizing Fifa or Trump, who disclosed he requested a review of the ban.

Claus officiated the match where he issued Balogun a red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina following a VAR review.

Tebas described the Balogun ruling as the "tip of the iceberg" amid a string of incidents that have been "eroding the credibility of Fifa and football in general for many years".

The 63-year-old charged that Fifa operates as a closed entity where outcomes are predetermined before votes and without input from domestic leagues.

"And the worst of all is that much of the football world is aware of it, but too many prefer to maintain a complicit silence," Tebas posted on X.

"Because staying quiet is more comfortable than defending independence, transparency, and good governance.

"World football deserves institutions that are accountable, respect the rules, and govern with transparency - not through unilateral, discretionary, arbitrary decisions that erode the trust of fans, clubs, leagues, and players."
