England midfielder Jordan Henderson picked up a serious wrist injury during celebrations following his team's thrilling World Cup last-16 victory against Mexico, according to head coach Thomas Tuchel.

The 36-year-old appeared to fall awkwardly from the advertising boards at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City after the 3-2 win and was taken off on a stretcher.

Henderson, who plays for Brentford, had seen limited involvement in the tournament with just a six-minute cameo in the group win over Panama.

"Jordan fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad," Tuchel told BBC One following Monday's match.

"It is a serious injury and it is unfortunate that Jordan cannot be with us tonight. The doctor has informed me he is receiving treatment in hospital."

The player is being supported by England staff and will not travel back with the team on Monday.

England's quarter-final against Norway takes place in Miami on Saturday at 22:00 BST and can be followed via BBC Radio 5 Live along with the BBC Sport website and app.

Henderson is expected to be sidelined alongside Reece James, who suffered a hamstring problem in England's opening fixture.

Jarell Quansah will miss the next game after being sent off with a straight red card in the win over Mexico.
