England skipper Harry Kane believes it is premature to determine if he will continue representing his nation through to the 2030 World Cup after the distressing semi-final loss to Argentina.

The title holders Argentina staged a thrilling late recovery in Atlanta securing a 2-1 victory over Thomas Tuchel's England team and advancing to face Spain in the final on Sunday.

This marks England's second World Cup semi-final defeat in eight years under the Bayern Munich striker Kane after the 2-1 loss to Croatia back in 2018.

While Kane commended Argentina's inspirational 39-year-old leader Lionel Messi the 32-year-old ex-Tottenham forward remains uncertain about featuring for England in four years.

"It is too soon to discuss that. For me it is about assessing things season by season and how my body responds," said Kane.

"The national side represents my greatest pride and joy it is what I enjoy doing above all else.

"Four years feels distant and I turn 33 this summer yet as seen with Leo [Messi] he continues performing at the top level [at 39].

"I refuse to set boundaries on such matters. Right now the focus is on handling another difficult defeat."

Kane has netted six goals at this World Cup and with a third-place match ahead he could still claim the Golden Boot although both Messi who provided assists for both Argentina goals against England and France's Kylian Mbappe sit on eight.

England took the lead in the 55th minute of Wednesday's encounter when Anthony Gordon converted from Morgan Rogers' delivery.

Yet late strikes from Enzo Fernandez and in the second minute of added time from Lautaro Martinez left the Three Lions short of their first men's World Cup final since 1966.

"There is little to add everyone feels devastated," added Kane.

"When you stand so close ten minutes from glory and it slips away in that manner the players are naturally crushed.

"We performed strongly for 60 minutes. We scored and merited the advantage then we found it hard to retain possession and apply pressure allowing them to build momentum and opportunities in the attacking area.

"We must identify ways to improve in those moments. It has been the absent element across the past four or five tournaments."

England now turn attention to Saturday's third-place match against France (22:00 BST) which airs live on the BBC.

England have now fallen in the semi-finals across two of the last three men's World Cups and suffered European Championship final defeats in 2021 and 2024.

Central defender Dan Burn who received a warm reception upon entering as a second-half substitute while England led captured the mood among the players.

"Devastated," said the Newcastle defender. "Completely devastated.

"We executed the strategy effectively. To lead 1-0 then we became overly cautious conceding numerous crosses and opportunities.

"Facing opponents of such calibre it proves costly. This will linger with me for quite some time I believe."

England delivered composed performances in the prior rounds defeating Mexico 3-2 in the last 16 despite playing much of the second half with ten men then holding on to beat Norway 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

When asked why Tuchel's team could not sustain that form against the champions Burn replied: "I cannot explain it.

"It is natural [to feel tension] when so near to achieving something absent since '66 and reaching a final.

"Argentina have experienced that and gained assurance. In recent matches we defended the area superbly. We expected to repeat that yet we lacked tightness in the box."

Burn continued: "I remain proud of our World Cup achievements. Few expected much from us. We achieved plenty and truly believed we would succeed."

Like Kane midfielder Jude Bellingham has also scored six goals for England at this tournament.

"The players gave their all throughout the event I cannot question the commitment and determination," said Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham.

"Such is the reality for footballers at this standard. The finer the path the more painful the conclusion. I feel proud of every team-mate they delivered outstanding work over recent weeks.

"I hoped to join an England group that finally achieved it and crossed the threshold. To repeat the same messages to supporters heard repeatedly over years it is truly disappointing."

Despite the result head coach Tuchel keeps the support of the Football Association and is anticipated to guide the team to Euro 2028.

Yet Tuchel expressed surprise that his side could not close out the contest after establishing the lead.

"We moved 1-0 ahead yet it completely shifted momentum their way," Tuchel told BBC Radio 5 Live. "They embraced every risk thereafter. They performed with total freedom and quality.

"They introduced attacking changes and suddenly fielded four forwards while we failed to halt the crosses. We could not contain runners inside the area.

"We simply lacked physical presence. We lost duels and could not maintain possession. It represented a complete momentum reversal after our goal."

Tuchel noted his players had given "everything" across the tournament.

"The belief and assurance after taking a 1-0 lead simply was absent," he said.

"They [Argentina] competed with a nothing-to-lose approach embraced risks and we could not reclaim momentum."

England will co-host the European Championship in 2028 though qualification remains necessary.

When asked if they could win a major tournament Tuchel replied: "Yes naturally we can even without current evidence.

"After major losses it is vital to respect them process them stay united and then focus on the response. We feel close yet Argentina exposed the difference in the final half hour.

"Sadly we were near yet could not cross the line. We aimed to cross it and that remains our aim we feel deeply disappointed and will attempt once more."
