It appears that everyone desires a photo alongside Enrique Macaya Marquez.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni certainly does, pausing for a snapshot with the veteran broadcaster following his press briefing ahead of the World Cup group match against Jordan.

Known simply as Macaya, he possesses an extraordinary tale.

Over a career of nearly seven decades, this 91-year-old has reported on an unmatched 18 straight World Cups.

His initial assignment came in 1958, which included the emergence of 17-year-old talent Pele.

At age 24, Macaya traveled to Sweden for the event.

One early task involved watching Pele's Brazil face Austria, yet his standout recollection involves Argentina's infamous 6-1 loss to Czechoslovakia, dubbed the 'Disaster of Sweden'.

"It stays vivid in my mind as a severe beating for the Argentine squad," he recalls.

"We had little knowledge of Czechoslovakia. Lacking details and stats, they caught us off guard."

Nearly 70 years later, Macaya has witnessed football evolve dramatically.

He has covered icons like Pele, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, and many others.

Broadcasting shifted to digital formats, data became real-time, and the World Cup grew into a worldwide phenomenon.

Still, Macaya avoids hasty conclusions.

This approach influenced his opinion when Scaloni took the Argentina helm unexpectedly in 2018.

"I held modest expectations," notes Macaya, a voice on DSPORTS Radio. "I was unfamiliar with him."

Scaloni guided Argentina to Copa America, Finalissima, and World Cup triumphs, converting a perceived risk into a celebrated achievement.

Macaya reflects that observing these events strengthened a core belief from his long career.

"You cannot judge without thorough insight into the individual," he explains.

Argentina has advanced to the World Cup semi-finals once more, set to meet England on Wednesday at 20:00 BST, a game available live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Macaya thinks Argentina can replicate their 2022 victory.

"Absolutely possible," he states. "Considering potential outcomes, I see Argentina as able to claim the title."

Unsurprisingly, when asked his top Argentine player, he says "Clearly, it's Messi."

Yet on the greatest ever question, he hesitates.

"That inquiry warrants a grin," he responds. "Comparing players across eras proves impossible."

"Eras differ. Rivals change. Each athlete stands apart. I can note personal favorites without claiming supremacy."

This measured reply illustrates his enduring respect in the field, favoring depth over absolutes.

He applies similar care when contrasting Messi with Maradona.

"Making an objective comparison proves challenging," he notes.

"Opponents varied. Demands differed. Teammate backing was not the same. Their paths were distinct."

Likewise, he declines to rank Pele's 1970 Brazil against Maradona's 1986 Argentina.

"Comparison is unfeasible," he says. "Their approaches contrast entirely."

While triumphs bring joy, Macaya values losses equally in memory.

"Many matches stand out," he says. "Poor results form part of the recollection too."

For an Argentine, World Cup victories hold special significance.

"Claiming the World Cup ranks among my top memories, and for Maradona, the trophy answered his lifelong quest to become champion," he shares.

Regarding his own path, after nearly 70 years at the pinnacle event, retirement approaches.

"I will step away eventually," he chuckles.

"I'm retiring soon... so I'll sign off and revisit later."

For a man who chronicled football's milestones, this seems a suitable end to an exceptional journey.

Yet consistent with his style, Macaya Marquez's exit does not seem conclusive.
