Switzerland forward Breel Embolo made history as the first player sent off under a new World Cup rule on mistaken identity.

Already cautioned earlier, Embolo received a second yellow card in the 72nd minute of his team's quarter-final loss to Argentina for diving, resulting in his dismissal.

The initial booking went to Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes after what seemed a heavy challenge, but the video assistant referee prompted the match official Joao Pinheiro to review footage on the sideline monitor.

After checking the replay, the referee ruled that Embolo had simulated contact.

The Swiss attacker appeared devastated by the decision, especially after his side had equalized against the defending champions just five minutes before.

The 29-year-old left the field in Kansas City visibly emotional and was comforted by teammates as he departed.

Swiss coach Murat Yakin criticized the call, stating there was no basis for the yellow card in what he described as a minor incident that should have been allowed to continue.

He argued the team suffered under an unfair regulation that does not belong in the sport and called the unnecessary intervention deeply frustrating.

Yakin noted the ruling ruined their match but stressed they must move forward despite the painful outcome.

Pundits offered little sympathy for Embolo, who features for French side Rennes. Former striker Bradley Wright-Phillips remarked on ITV that he felt for the teammates rather than Embolo, as the incident may have ended their semi-final hopes.

Ex-Jamaica international Jobi McAnuff said Embolo had let down both himself and his squad, noting the action appeared worse in slow motion and that he may have anticipated contact that never arrived.

McAnuff acknowledged it was simulation yet expressed some pity for the player.

Argentina secured a 3-1 victory in extra time against the reduced side and will meet England in the semi-finals, broadcast live on the BBC.

Yakin praised his team's spirit, saying they gave everything despite being down to ten men and that he felt immense pride in their effort.
