The 2026 Commonwealth Games entered a period of serious doubt after the original host, Australia's Victoria state, withdrew in 2023 over mounting expenses. The move caught Commonwealth Sport leaders off guard.

Following more than twelve months of doubt, Glasgow agreed to stage the event for a second time after delivering a successful edition in 2014.

With tight timelines in place, the Glasgow program has been scaled back considerably from previous editions.

While 18 sports featured in 2014 and 20 appeared in Birmingham two years ago, only ten disciplines are on the schedule this time.

Around two thousand fewer athletes are expected and no new venues have been constructed, with athletics shifting from Hampden Park's 46,000 seats to Scotstoun Stadium's capacity of just over 10,000.

Operating costs have been reduced sharply from the 700 to 800 million pounds spent on Birmingham 2022 and the Gold Coast 2018 to 160 million pounds for Glasgow.

Organisers maintain that the reduced format, whether planned or not, offers a workable model going forward.

They argue a leaner, lower-cost and more sustainable Games can endure.

Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadleir told BBC Sport that the organisation has never been in a stronger position.

She explained that leaders examined their approach closely and decided a reset was needed to make the event appealing again to member nations.

Importantly, the Indian city of Ahmedabad has already been confirmed as host for 2030, when the sport count is projected to rise to between 15 and 18.

Several nations have shown interest in staging the 2034 edition, with New Zealand declaring publicly and Nigeria still keen after its earlier bid challenge.

Founded in 1930 as the British Empire Games, the competition continues to face questions over its relevance today.

England weightlifter Emily Campbell described the Games to the BBC as one of the better outcomes linked to colonisation, while Olympic swimming champion Tom Dean said they can still deliver positive impact despite historical issues.

He added that the event deserves greater attention because it highlights sport at its finest.

The Glasgow edition has nevertheless been affected by missing headline athletes.

Injuries to figures such as gymnast Max Whitlock and Australian swimmer Kaylee McKeown are unfortunate yet unavoidable.

Other competitors have chosen to focus elsewhere this summer.

Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson is opting for the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham instead, while Dina Asher-Smith and St Lucia's Julien Alfred have also withdrawn, as has Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh.

Positive notes remain, however.

Josh Kerr, fresh from a world mile record, will compete for Scotland alongside Eilish McColgan, while Katerina Johnson-Thompson seeks a third straight heptathlon title and Adam Peaty returns to the pool that brought him two golds in 2014.

The Games stay a highlight for sports such as netball and feature greater Para-sport integration than ever before, with 47 Para medal events counting toward the overall tally.

Paralympic champion Brock Whiston told BBC Sport that few other multi-sport events offer such integration and that smaller nations gain vital visibility through the Commonwealth Games.

English swimmer James Guy, competing at his fourth edition, noted that the event provides an accessible route for younger athletes to gain experience and medals that aid development.

Public response will also shape the event's prospects, with ticket sales unlikely to reach the 1.3 million figure from 2014.

Athletics and cycling have sold best, yet seats remain open across all sports during the 11-day program.

A further shift sees TNT Sports replace the BBC as the live television rights holder, ending 18 consecutive free-to-air cycles, although radio coverage continues on BBC Radio 5 Live.

This change makes reaching wider audiences harder at a pivotal moment.

The coming 11 days will prove critical for the future direction of the Games.
