A Huddersfield Town flag hangs from one of the art deco hotels that turn this stretch of Miami Beach into a lively, extravagant showcase. Two Norway supporters in national jerseys ride past on bicycles, the woman fixing her viking helmet before pedaling onward. To locals playing volleyball near the dunes as they usually do, the unfolding scene feels both unavoidable and far removed.

Even Miami may not have witnessed a gathering quite like this one. Roughly 30,000 England fans are set to gather here by Saturday, yet they face strong competition from Norway followers who have delivered some of the tournament's most memorable moments. Reaching the quarter-final stage rewards those who have traveled for weeks and draws in others on impulse.

"After the match against Mexico I thought, 'Do you know what? What an experience it would be to come out and do it,'" says James Shipperley from Uxbridge in west London. He and his 15-year-old son Freddie pause to try the outdoor gym at muscle beach. Their tickets cost 1,500 pounds each; the last-minute journey meant time away from school and, for James, from running his pub. "You have to spend freely but it creates a lasting memory, does it not?" he continues. "It is special to share this with him. What is the purpose of working if you cannot enjoy moments like this?"

Plenty of activities await before the match. A pool party at the Clevelander was projected to draw 600 England fans on Friday afternoon, with the event running until 4am. "It will be an intense evening," says John Gallivan, a Bristol Rovers supporter. He has been on the road since 3 June, tracking Thomas Tuchel's team through their highs, lows and steady periods. "Mexico City ranked as a true bucket-list moment, truly remarkable if I am honest. I doubt I will encounter anything similar again. Still, we managed to quiet the home crowd somewhat."

Gallivan allows himself to picture a journey to New York the following weekend. "I believe we can progress all the way," he says. "I will not pretend otherwise, I feel some concern about France since they appear to be advancing smoothly. Yet if we face them on the pitch I would accept that outcome." Could Erling Haaland present an overwhelming challenge? "I am not concerned. He represents one player while we have 26 capable ones. Provided they deliver, we will manage."

Others remain more measured about containing Haaland, who looks to extend his tally of seven goals across four matches. "That remains the central question, does it not?" says Neil Barker, a Leeds supporter who has resided in Denver for two decades. "He has been contained in the Premier League previously and our players are familiar with him. Everything remains open."

For Barker, who served as a Fifa volunteer in Philadelphia earlier in the competition, the atmosphere differs sharply from life in Colorado. "You would hardly notice the tournament there," he notes. "We have met in British and Irish pubs to watch the matches. I truly wanted to travel here and witness whether England can advance." He plans to attend the game alongside Brazilian friends born in England who have committed their support to the Three Lions this weekend.

Additional evidence of the World Cup's ability to unite people appears in Sean and Katie, who stroll arm in arm past cafe tables filling with morning meals and drinks. In one positive result from England's lackluster draw with Ghana, they connected in Boston last month and a rapid summer romance has brought them together again in Miami.

"The celebrations, the enjoyment and the lighthearted spirit have all been outstanding," says Sean, who comes from Derby. "I have felt confident about England from the start. Not without some tension, since they always test you. I expect them to rise to the occasion and keep Haaland contained by Dan Burn."

He has guided Katie, an American, into the energy and appeal of England's traveling supporters. "They welcome me and involve me in every part of their journey," she says. "I enjoy experiencing it through their perspective and sharing in all the moments."

Norway's group will not depart without making noise. Hundreds prepare to perform their well-known viking row in two separate sessions at South Beach during the afternoon. It has proved difficult to round a corner lately without spotting the long blond hair of Ole Froystad, known as Mr Row Row, who created the online sensation.

Do his fellow supporters sense an upset to surpass their earlier victory over Brazil? "With my heart I will say we win 2-1," says Haakon, who journeyed from Stavanger with his partner Stella after Norway defeated Cote d'Ivoire in the round of 32. "Player for player England hold an advantage over us but we possess greater collective spirit. This experience defies description."

As midday approaches, a gathering of Norway fans lines the pavement to high-five anyone trailing their rivals while chanting that England is heading home. No one present at this unusual and memorable World Cup celebration in southeast Florida wishes the occasion to conclude at this stage.
