“Carlisle and Barrow are set to clash next season in the Cumbrian derby within the National League,” notes Peter Hutchinson. “These clubs sit at opposite extremities of Cumbria, with their grounds roughly 78 miles apart by road. Is this the longest separation for teams in a derby?”

To clarify: we focus on the shortest driving distances. More crucially, we exclude pure rivalries. We seek contests tied by geography or closeness, not historical feuds like Real Madrid versus Barcelona's 'clasico', where distance matters little beyond national borders.

In the UK, the Cumbrian derby appears to hold the record for distance. Sticking to England, the nearest rival is the A49 derby pitting Shrewsbury Town against Hereford United, 51 miles apart, though they haven't played since Hereford United folded in 2014. The reborn Hereford FC in National League North is often viewed as its successor.

In England, Crystal Palace versus Brighton - the M23 derby - comes to mind, but Selhurst Park to the Amex Stadium is just 46 miles, barely spanning half the Lake District gap from Carlisle to Barrow. Similarly, Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City's Devon derby spans 46 miles. Trailing slightly, Ipswich and Norwich - the East Anglian derby (or El Tractico, the Old Farm) - sit 45 miles apart between Portman Road and Carrow Road. AFC Wimbledon against MK Dons could stretch to derby status (beyond mere rivalry), with Plough Lane to Stadium MK at 60 miles.

Looking overseas, note the Indonesian derby, or Laga Klasikal, between Persib Bandung and Persija Jakarta. Persib's Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium is 108 miles from Persija's Jakarta International Stadium in the capital. This Asian spectacle is intensely competitive on and off the field.

Italy offers many renowned derbies, likely hiding the champion. The Derby d’Italia joins Milan and Juventus, 85 miles from San Siro to Allianz Stadium in northwest Italy. Also, the Derby dell’Appennino spans the mountains between Bologna and Florence, 64 miles from Renato Dall’Ara to Artemio Franchi. Sicily's Derby di Sicilia links Palermo and Catania over 134 miles, while the Derby delle Isole pits Palermo against Sardinia's Cagliari across 250 miles of Tyrrhenian Sea.

Yet the top spot belongs to New Zealand's North Island. Auckland FC, new to A-League Men in 2024-25, faces Wellington Phoenix in a budding New Zealand derby. In February's sixth meeting, a farcical own goal by Wellington's Josh Oluwayemi led to a 5-0 Auckland rout, forcing coach Giancarlo Italiano's instant resignation. At 386 miles between grounds, this NZD takes the crown. Sorry, Cumbria.

Dave Stewart adds: “Manager Adam Hinshelwood [father of Brighton's Jack] left York City early; they later edged Rochdale for National League. He guided Worthing to Conference South lead at Christmas, clinching it amid Dorking's collapse. York might not medal him for his 10 points, but he aided two English non-league titles this season.”

Dan Almond notes Evann Guessand could earn Europa and Conference League medals if Aston Villa and Crystal Palace beat Freiburg and Rayo Vallecano in finals.

Easy street

“Chelsea met just one Premier League side, Leeds, to reach the FA Cup final. Has any side made the final without top-flight foes?” ponders Jeremy Cartwright.

“Yes, in a legendary final,” says Mykola Kozlenko. “1923's 'white horse' FA Cup saw West Ham (second-tier) face only lower sides: Hull City (D2), Brighton (D3), Plymouth (D3), Southampton (D2), Derby County (D2). Les Herbiers in 2017-18 Coupe de France (third-tier) dodged Ligue 1 until PSG final, beating Coulaines (D6), Châteaubriant (D5), Balma (D5), Romorantin (D4), Angoulême (D5), Saint-Lô (D5), Auxerre (D2), Lens (D2), Chambly (D3).”

“Millwall reached 2004 FA Cup final without top-flight tests, defeating Walsall, Telford United, Burnley, Tranmere Rovers, Sunderland,” says Phil Benton. “Manchester United awaited in the end.”

Opta data shows five Republic of Ireland starters max, three times. In 1992, Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday; Alan Kernaghan, Curtis Fleming, Chris Morris, Graham Kavanagh, Bernie Slavin started. Only Kavanagh was Irish-born/raised; unused sub Alan Moore was too. On February 1, 2012, Aston Villa drew 2-2 with QPR: Shay Given, Richard Dunne, Ciaran Clark, Stephen Ireland, Robbie Keane. Only Clark born abroad. They started Villa's next loss 2-1 at Newcastle.
