When Vitor Matos assumed control at Swansea in November 2025, fears of a possible drop were widely discussed. Yet nearly twelve months later, the Swans lead the Championship standings after ten fixtures.

Looking back, the appointment looks inspired given that Matos had overseen just twelve senior matches prior to his arrival - all in Portugal's second tier.

Beneath those limited senior outings lies a coaching path covering twenty-three years, multiple continents and diverse responsibilities.

Before taking the Maritimo job, the thirty-eight-year-old spent five seasons with Jurgen Klopp as an elite development coach at Liverpool and then moved to Red Bull Salzburg as Pep Lijnders' assistant.

I spoke with the Portuguese coach to examine his influences, core ideas and the shifting tactical environment.

Constructing a side around counter-pressing suits Matos given his years alongside Klopp.

"Liverpool shaped me greatly in counter-pressing, pressing, intensity and the elements that help a team develop," he noted.

"The key factor is the strength of belief in your concept, and this approach reflects how I view the game. That is why I chose it as our base."

While the influence stands out, it would be wrong to label Matos purely as a Klopp disciple.

"I began coaching very young and absorbed ideas from many sources," he continued.

Signs of those varied sources appear in Swansea's current game model, as Matos blends concepts from FC Porto, Shandong Taishan and Liverpool.

Matos outlined his main goals upon replacing Alan Sheehan.

"The priority was restoring team confidence and helping players enjoy playing together," he said.

"We began by making the side more aggressive without the ball.

"Demanding greater aggression and celebrating high regains or strong tackles helped build a positive atmosphere."

He also chose a back four.

"The squad had alternated between back fours and back fives before my arrival. I felt the group suited a back four and maintaining that setup provided needed stability.

"In our 4-3-3 we aimed to become a pressing and counter-pressing side willing to take risks.

"From there the focus shifted to finding ways to increase aggression."

In that remark Matos highlighted a central element of his method that surfaced repeatedly in our discussion.

He described several fixed principles yet stressed that the path to achieving them must adapt to the available players.

Consequently he adopts a complete view of each individual, learning about them both as players and people before deciding how they fit his system.

"Our solutions change depending on whether we face man-marking or zonal defences," Matos explained.

"Against a full zonal side the main task is to shift them. Movement creates space and frees a teammate."

Much of positional play's success rests on locating that free player.

Against zonal systems an attacker can occupy a gap and remain unmarked. Should a defender step across, another attacker may be left open.

The growing use of man-to-man marking creates a fresh problem, as individual tracking can remove the free player entirely.

To address this Matos drew on his China experience.

"In China I learned that reaching a positional game can involve intermediate steps," he said.

"Keeping more players near the ball rather than spreading them wide offers advantages.

"Spreading wide requires technical one-v-one ability. Bringing players closer generates more options and creates a tempo that lets others exploit larger spaces."

This distinctive approach and the resulting overloads have supplied Swansea with extra answers near the ball, disrupting both zonal and man-marking setups.

Matos added: "Using a midfielder wide allows us to overload one flank. We can exchange passes five or eight times before accelerating forward."

Young coaches often receive praise for tactics, yet management also involves moments away from the whiteboard.

At thirty-eight, Matos serves as a link between coaching eras.

"Ultimately I aim to value each person appropriately, bring out their best and let them be themselves. Only then can they truly contribute," he said.

"My time with Jurgen proved vital in this regard. His leadership, care for the club and players shaped much of my outlook."

Matos now applies that experience in his player-centred style.

"I am from Portugal, yet teammates arrive from Argentina, Brazil, Germany or the UK. Each brings different paths to this point," he said.

"One may have enjoyed a stable home while another did not, making them more emotional. Understanding these backgrounds with sensitivity matters.

"With all that in mind, we share one goal: winning the next match."
