On Inigo Perez's opening day in charge as head coach, a phone call arrived from Andoni Iraola, continuing their daily exchanges that had lasted months. The pair had shared 22 years of friendship, shared living quarters, progressed through the same youth system and featured in the same side; they had collaborated closely as manager and assistant before launching a joint venture. Yet now Perez faced the task solo. At 36, he had reached the role his companion predicted upon their first meeting, though earlier than expected. "He offered best wishes and noted his availability," Perez recalled, "mentioned that if I required support ..."

Well, perhaps not every request.

"Life sometimes delivers the unexpected," Perez noted following his debut in management. Now he heads to Anfield. Circumstances unfold oddly. Without the Home Office rejecting his work permit, without an FA panel deeming him unable to enhance English football, without a partnership ending and a family returning home, without an early career setback, Villarreal's manager would not occupy the bench left of the halfway line at Anfield this evening. He would instead sit on the opposite side.

Now the individual intended as Iraola's aide faces him as rival, with no concessions over 90 minutes. "I anticipate meeting him; we stay in touch constantly, always supportive," Perez states. "Facing one another on the touchline feels moving. Once the whistle sounds, competition takes over, yet this remains a fine tale."

The narrative began in 2002, when Perez joined Athletic Club Bilbao's academy at age 14. Iraola stood at 19, half a year from his senior debut. They first appeared together in the senior squad during October 2009, but as youths sharing accommodation, a bond had formed that would persist. Though Perez proved more outgoing while Iraola stayed reserved, even shy, common traits united them: curious intellect, skill in watching and hearing, plus modesty suited to a club that banned arrogance.

"Mentally they excel," notes former teammate Carlos Gurpegui, with the term intelligent recurring fondly. "Andoni possessed a sharp mind and Inigo showed great instinct. We played fantasy football and Andoni always triumphed," goalkeeper Raul Fernandez remembers.

Such qualities brought natural leadership worn with ease rather than force. As one coach observes: "If the group leaned left and Andoni suggested right, all would agree: yes, go right. These two stand out for intelligence, constantly analyzing and connecting with others."

Iraola spotted potential in the emerging player, exploring concepts jointly. "Inigo always noticed tactical changes," he later remarked. "At 14 or 15, his game understanding seemed advanced. From the start I knew Inigo, I believed he had the character for coaching. Actually, he held clearer coaching ambitions than I did."

David Lopez, a fellow player, observes: "No shock they entered coaching." Eneko Boveda, who entered the academy alongside Perez, adds: "They might have coached separately; together it seemed inevitable. Inigo impressed greatly in personal ties, central to every dressing room: emotionally aware and understanding."

Age gaps posed no issue, stemming from their shared environment and communal ethos. "Upon reaching the first team, the older group held sway, yet conversation flowed easily, even for life guidance," recalls Fernandez, born in 1988 like Perez. "I recall querying Andoni on contract matters. Under Marcelo Bielsa, players gathered pre-match over hot chocolate and croissants to discuss. Bielsa demanded much, always pressing; we found shelter among ourselves."

Perez might have missed out entirely, overlooked by Bielsa until a session where he collided with goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz. "Blood flowed, his lip gashed, yet Inigo persisted and Marcelo decided: this player I would follow anywhere," Gurpegui recounts. Visualizing it, Fernandez chuckles: "Inigo had no idea his fate. I think he even stayed overnight at Lezama on a mattress, proving his dedication. That day Bielsa yelled at physios: leave him, leave him, he wants to continue. He urged Inigo: bravo, bravo, that's the spirit, lad."

A full-back opening arose and Perez responded as always: adjusted. Above all they watched, absorbed everything. "Inigo and I discussed Bielsa's methods often," Iraola recalled. They posed endless queries to assistants Claudio Vivas, Pablo Quiroga and Diego Reyes, seeking reasons. "Yet they are football obsessives who drew lessons from any source," Boveda notes.

Their final joint appearance came in October 2013. Iraola retired in 2016 and began coaching two years later. Quietly, Perez moved similarly. Mutual contacts and a shared agent kept them close, and in February 2022 paths crossed anew. Perez sat out as Osasuna won 3-0 at Rayo, but that evening's talk lingered in Iraola's thoughts, prompting a mental note.

At 34, Perez informed Iraola his focus now centered on aiding coaches. Indeed, Osasuna boss Jagoba Arrasate already called him a player-assistant coach and soon asked him to join staff. Bielsa also approached, angry when Perez declined Uruguay. Upon hearing of Perez's retirement, Iraola rang at once, persuading him to join Rayo. Assistant Unai Mendia was departing and the old teammate fit perfectly. The impact registered instantly: "Inigo excels," a Rayo staff member says. "He stood out, a standout. Top level, like Andoni."

Alongside fitness coach Pablo de la Torre, who built a physical framework for their bold approach, they delivered surprises, masters of structured disorder. Football proved most enjoyable there, a shared outlook that soon drew Premier League interest.

"When we learned Andoni would depart for Bournemouth, I told Inigo he should lead us," Rayo striker Sergio Camello recalls, and club leaders concurred. Perez, however, viewed it as ethically incorrect: this was Iraola's project, not his to claim. Moreover, he wished to stay with his friend. Iraola desired the same, bringing only two staff to England: Perez and De la Torre. It marked a fresh beginning, a new chapter, and he wanted his allies present.

Yet Perez faced work permit refusal. Bournemouth appealed to an FA exceptions panel. Endorsements arrived, arguments presented. Iraola wrote too, detailing their past and calling Perez essential. The panel stayed unconvinced he ranked among the highest calibre or could greatly advance the game at England's elite level.

"We tried all options," Perez said, accurately: they even sought a youth coach permit, earning rebuke for the attempt. Awaiting final word, Perez continued duties: barred from club kit, public appearances or bench time, yet daily at the training ground. By late autumn, they conceded. The setback stung, personally and professionally. "It proved tough, awkward for everyone," Iraola says. "You cannot work, cannot enrol children in school."

Shaun Cooper, Tommy Elphick and De la Torre absorbed Perez's tasks, with Iraola noting and appreciating the inherited group. With his tourist visa ending, Perez returned to Spain. Bournemouth calls persisted, mixing advice and chats beyond football. When Rayo dismissed Francisco Rodriguez in early 2024, the club again offered the manager role. Iraola urged Perez to accept. "Last summer, I felt it wrong ethically and wanted to remain with Andoni," Perez said. "Conditions shifted."

Camello admits: "The shift from assistant to head coach proved challenging. He had been so near us. Inigo cared for us deeply: he felt such duty toward us that tensions as the lead coach weighed on him. Yet he connected, reached us. Ties remain strong: he sent me music suggestions yesterday. And I may never meet anyone so skilled in football. Remarkable how many answers he provides during matches. Seeing him and Andoni in the Champions League comes as no surprise. They know no bounds; we feel fortunate two exceptional figures guided us."

Paths diverged, yet directions aligned, styles too. "My approach stems from Andoni," Perez said. Disorder continued far apart yet a call away. Iraola guided Bournemouth to Europe for the first time; Perez secured Rayo's initial European spot and steered them to their sole final. This summer brought bigger tests, so here they stand at Anfield, with relief that a friend's path recovered and advanced. "I feel truly glad for Inigo," one staffer says, "as good outcomes suit good individuals and he ranks among the best."

They will observe from Bilbao, where it started. "It holds meaning: I feel proud," says Lopez. Gurpegui adds: "Inigo endured hardship in England but that led to new chances and now see: Andoni at Anfield. Quite something, I am delighted, as they are two fine people: modest, reliable in need. Football requires more like them." Fernandez concludes: "Knowing them, it should entertain too: daring, courageous play, an excellent match."

Iraola remarks: "Such fixtures strain relationships. We usually converse often but opposition reduces that. This match feels unique as he is my friend. He understands me deeply. We have shared much."
