McIlroy shouts at his tee shot on the par-3 11th to sit down. There is little cause for concern as the ball settles safely on the green and settles about 11 feet away. Rory collects himself and rolls in the putt for birdie. He then slips into his energy-saving mode in tough conditions: head lowered, eyes on the ball mark, brief nod to the gallery, then moves to the next tee.

From Dallas, Texas, please welcome Scottie Scheffler. A fairly understated introduction for the world number one, who could become just the seventh player ever to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the US Open this week. Scheffler, wearing the same outfit as McIlroy with white cap, grey sweater and dark trousers, strikes an iron 260 yards down the fairway. Scheffler joins current champion J.J. Spaun and US Amateur winner Mason Howell in his group.

McIlroy produces a fine lag putt at the 10th for a tap-in par. Those are valuable in these conditions. A solid start. Fleetwood faces a tougher opening hole after missing the fairway off the tee, with his second shot bounding into a hollow left of the green. His pitch is solid but the 11-footer for par slides past, resulting in a bogey to begin.

Strong wind blows from the right as McIlroy plays his 173-yard approach to the 10th. He steps away briefly, uncertain. When Rory finally swings, he hits the middle of the green. The Masters champion will have two putts from 40 feet for par.

McDowell continues to defy the conditions ahead. After birdie at 10 he adds another from inside nine feet at 11 to reach -2. Following a strong approach at 12, the Pebble Beach winner could complete three straight birdies with a 12-footer.

Here comes Rory. Like fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, McIlroy starts at the 10th. He selects iron and finds the fairway safely. He plays alongside Shinnecock runner-up Tommy Fleetwood and Swedens Ludvig Aberg. There may be some Ryder Cup talk among the trio after Europes win at nearby Bethpage Black last year. As noted, defeated Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley misses a six-footer for par on his first hole.

Half the field begins at 10 today, including former champion Graeme McDowell. G-Mac captured the title at Pebble Beach in 2010 and thrives on windy coastal tests. He still putts well too, draining a 25-footer for an opening birdie. Kristoffer Reitan, now among Norways top sports figures after his Truist Championship victory, also cards a 3 at the 10th.

Koepka, in his pink and white striped shirt resembling a 1970s candy, finds the sand with his approach at 1. He executes a fine bunker shot to tap-in distance and saves par. Cam Young delivers an even better up-and-down for his 4, hitting a large flop shot that stops four feet from the flag.

The first big group of the day tees off. That includes Brooks Koepka, winner here in 2018, Players Championship victor Cameron Young and current Scottish Open, Sony Open and WM Phoenix Open champion Chris Gotterup. Koepka and Young hit the fairway with irons but Gotterup lands in a greenside bunker after choosing driver. The first is a short par-4 of 396 yards, offering a gentle start to a demanding layout.

James Nicholas sounds more like a county cricketer than the US Open leader. Yet the 29-year-old has an intriguing story and his family is well known in certain New York circles.

From his US Open profile: His grandfather and father are noted orthopaedic surgeons who served as team doctors for the N.Y. Jets, N.Y. Knicks, N.Y. Islanders and N.Y. Rangers. Each has operated on Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath. His father, Stephen, played football and baseball at Harvard. James qualified for two U.S. Amateurs and was the 2019 Ivy League Player of the Year. In 2024 he won the New York State Open at Bethpage State Parks Black Course, a two-time U.S. Open venue.

James Nicholas becomes the first player under par. Just off the green at the 497-yard par-4 third, he is pleased to get down in two from 50 feet. His putt, over a ridge, stays on line with perfect pace and drops for birdie.

Sixteen players have finished at least one hole and sit a combined 12-over. That, along with the bunker style, confirms this is a US Open rather than The Open.

The waving flags, grey skies, fescue, large greens with steep run-offs and players in sweaters against the chill. This feels more like an Open Championship than a June US Open.

Englands Matthew Jordan has a 14-foot birdie putt at the first to reach red figures. It tracks the line but stops just short. Greens received water during the delay to prevent strong winds making them unplayable later. Morning dew in the fog may cause some putts to come up short until players adapt.

The horn sounds and play resumes. Rory McIlroy is on the range. He will now tee off two hours later than planned at 14:52 BST.

With the delay exactly two hours, tee times are adjusted. Two hours have been added to the original schedule. If any minor adjustments are needed, they will be noted.

Play to resume at 09:05 ET after two-hour delay

Good news. Round 1 of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills will resume at 9:05 a.m. ET, according to the official update. That is just over 15 minutes from now.

Weather delay affects golf while cricket continues at the Oval. The situation seems reversed from expectations.

Official update: Another update will follow shortly. The USGA issues updates every 15 minutes indicating the next one is 15 minutes away. They have little choice but to proceed this way. At least clear information is provided.

Meanwhile Padraig Harrington comments: I just want to go back to bed. The three-time major winner, now 54, needs extra time to loosen joints and is not pleased about a second warm-up whenever it occurs.

Rickie Fowler is among the morning starters waiting for clearer skies. He offered a shrug-filled interview. Kind of just sit and wait. There is nothing we can do about visibility out there. I was not expecting low-hanging clouds like this, so we sit and wait.

Good to see some shots this morning to gauge how the course is playing. And yeah, kind of just wait. We are supposed to have wind and gusts that pick up later. Hopefully we can get moving forward out there.

Fowler finished runner-up in the US Open at Pinehurst in 2014 and started with a remarkable 62 at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023, tying the lowest score in mens major history.

Exactly an hour since play was suspended. Conditions still appear quite foggy.

Official US Open weather update: Round 1 remains suspended. Next update: 8:00 a.m. ET. That is 1 p.m. UK time, so more information in about five minutes. Players are in practice areas working on chipping and putting.

The earliest starters managed a couple of holes. No one is under par, with an eight-way tie for the lead at even par including Jackson Suber and amateur Ethan Fang. Last June American Fang won the 130th Amateur Championship at Royal St Georges. Both have played just one hole. Fellow Americans James Nicholas and Caleb Surratt sit atop the leaderboard after parring their first two holes.

Let us go. Or perhaps not. Weather on Long Island is not cooperating and play is suspended. Players were taken off at 12:05 p.m. UK time due to fog.

The official statement indicates another update in just under 10 minutes.

What a time to be a New Yorker.

The Knicks have secured their first NBA title since 1973, a World Cup is in town and one of its iconic golf courses hosts this weeks US Open.

Shinnecock Hills in the Hamptons is the only US Open venue to stage the event across three centuries. With only one road in and out for visitors to Long Island, traffic issues heighten the weeks theme: nothing comes easily.

In the four US Opens since 1986 only three men have posted under-par totals. Shinnecock is tough, sometimes brutal, and a windy forecast for this links-style exposed property, especially in todays first round, could push scores higher. That would not be unusual.

In 2018 none of the last 45 players in round three broke par of 70, while in 2004 the final-round scoring average reached 78.7 and the par-3 seventh required watering between groups amid near-impossible conditions.
