PFL lightweight world champion Usman Nurmagomedov plans to announce his future plans very soon after his contract ends, according to cousin and coach Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Russia's Nurmagomedov secured a knockout win over American Archie Colgan in New York last week, keeping his title in the last bout of his PFL deal.

The 28-year-old fighter remains undefeated with 22 wins and stands out as a top prospect beyond the UFC, with many expecting him to join that promotion eventually.

His contract conclusion aligns with a fresh phase for the PFL following its merger with Most Valuable Promotions last week.

In an Instagram post, Khabib commended Nurmagomedov and drew parallels to teammate Islam Makhachev, the UFC welterweight champion, while noting that talks on his next step will unfold over the coming month.

"Usman has demonstrated through his actions in recent years that he ranks as the top lightweight outside the UFC," Khabib said.

"Back in 2020 when I called Islam the best, some disagreed. There are clear differences in skill levels here.

"You will see the outcome soon. Negotiations start over the next month, and you will learn which league he picks."

Nurmagomedov's first-round knockout of Colgan marked his second PFL title defense and sixth overall since the Bellator belt rebranded in 2025.

After the fight, Nurmagomedov requested a bonus from MVP co-owner Jake Paul, who offered a car for a knockout in the next bout.

Nurmagomedov hinted at uncertainty by replying that they should focus on the present rather than the unknown future.

At the UFC event in Belgrade on Saturday, president Dana White responded positively with a slight smile when asked about signing Nurmagomedov.

Paul has often criticized White on fighter pay, and Nurmagomedov touched on this in his post-fight comments.

"MVP criticizes Dana on pay issues - now we will see what they offer," Nurmagomedov stated.

Observers have speculated on how Nurmagomedov would perform in the UFC, given his path mirrors that of Khabib.

Khabib retired undefeated in 2020 after 29 wins and earned recognition as one of the sport's all-time greats.

Khabib relied on constant pressure and wrestling, while Nurmagomedov excels as a grappler but stands apart with striking kicks to control bouts.

Nurmagomedov stays undefeated like his cousin, yet aside from tough matches against Paul Hughes in 2025, he has faced limited challenges in the PFL.

A move to the UFC could lead to high-profile matchups that boost his profile, though financial aspects remain less certain than the exposure benefits.

The UFC allocates roughly 20 percent of revenue to fighter compensation, drawing criticism, while the impact of the PFL and MVP merger on pay remains unclear.
