48km to go Simmons now leads by 15 seconds over Pidcock's group. He has 500m remaining to the summit and is also gaining time on the peloton, now 3'08" behind.

49km to go Van Wilder and Schmid struggle at the rear of the leading group. Simmons then launches a strong attack, quickly opening a gap of three to five metres on Pidcock.

Hello Alistair Connor: "His determination deserves respect, yet standard thinking suggests Pidcock should focus on his general classification position, given his ranking prevents an easy breakaway victory. His character suits one-day events better."

51km to go Pidcock remains at the front while navigating crowds on a steep 12 per cent gradient. The peloton trails by 2.42, with Visma Lease a Bike setting the pace.

52km to go Pidcock surges ahead and fragments the lead group. Both Visma riders drop back, though Yates clings on at the tail.

52km to go "Steep climbs ahead mean every rider for himself," TNT reports. Riders fall from the front group, including Healy. The lead group pushes hard while the peloton closes in.

55km to go Difficulty intensifies as riders begin the 4.6km climb averaging 11 per cent on the Col de la Croisette. Van Moer leads the breakaway with Pidcock close behind. Nearly two minutes separate them from the peloton.

61km to go Vinokurov is reeled in.

"Considering a jersey for the most entertaining rider" writes Matt Pennifold, "though Pogacar would likely claim it too."

A fine notion, yet the polka dots already celebrate fun. Pidcock and Carapaz also merit consideration.

65km to go Vinokurov attempts another escape. In the front pack, a rider reports no one wants to collaborate with Pidcock.

68km to go Commentators note this French region is renowned for plums. A welcome boost for Tom Pidcock, who rises to fourth in virtual GC standings, though unlikely to hold it. The front group maintains a 2 mins 28 gap.

70km to go A morning chat with Evenepoel reveals one large spoonful of Nutella for breakfast, now fueling him in the peloton trailing by 2 mins 50. They pass chalked "Appuie Bon Dieu" on the road under bright sun with high spirits.

78 km to go The break holds a 2 mins 20 buffer. They appear to enter the beautiful Haute-Savoie department.

"Afternoon Tanya," James writes from his return from Norwich. "Seeing familiar names like Pidcock and Healy in the break again is notable. Their courage impresses, yet repeated attempts seem in vain against UAE's strength. They resemble a two-wheeled Light Brigade charging Pogacar and UAE's valley of death."

Half a league onward - the fearlessness stands out despite UAE's likely dominance. Such resolve requires mental strength.

81km to go Romain Bardet views the break as a tactical choice by GC teams. The final climb ranks among the Tour's toughest. A teammate in the front group offers a huge edge.

Visma and UAE lead the peloton.

87km to go The broad Rhone waters run alongside the break, now one minute 40 ahead. A 4km climb at 3 per cent follows, with gentler terrain until the Col de la Croisette in roughly 40km.

91km to go The break suddenly gains a minute and more on the peloton.

Tobias Johannessen, riding his brother's bike after a puncture, retrieves his own machine.

98km to go Vinokurov is caught by a group with Healy, Paret-Peintre, Pidcock, Bernal, Rubio and satellite riders. They lead the peloton by 15 seconds.

101km to go Nico Vinokurov, Kazakhstan champion, breaks alone and extends a 10-second lead.

105km to go EF Education-EasyPost brings the break back for Carapaz. Jan Tratnik receives a new bike.

Nick Wayne offers Pogacar praise: "Endless GOAT talk followed by boos. People should decide. He is an outstanding, admirable cyclist who races cleanly, and that matters most."

109km to go Sparse spectators line the route, small groups emerging briefly. The front group holds 20 seconds on the chasers as EF Education works to close the gap.

119 km to go "We need Carapaz in the break for KOM points," EF radio states. Pink jerseys lead the peloton.

124 km to go Two becomes ten as Oliveira, Matthews, Schmid, A. Johannessen, Skaarseth, Van Dijke, Garcia Pierna and Izagirre join Arensman and Azparren ahead. They lead by nine seconds.

Philip Terry ponders: "What if Pogi wins today, gains more time on Jonas, then supports Del Toro for second? A lazy afternoon reflection in France."

132km to go Arensman and Azparren keep their slim lead. Time for recovery with open fields on both sides.

139km to go A banner reads "Seixas le GOAT." On Decathlon radio he feels "super good." The peloton stretches into a long line with 30km of descent and rolling climbs ahead. Arensman and Azparren hold 10 seconds.

142km to go Arensman and Azparren enjoy the day's best break, 14 seconds clear while passing a ski jump beside pine-lined roads.

147km to go Paret-Peintre in the polka-dot jersey leads for KOM points with Carapaz following. Paret-Peintre takes two points, Carapaz one. Seixas returns to the peloton and thanks his teammate.

149km to go Shuffle continues. Carapaz is caught, Seixas rejoins, and Azparren moves forward.

150km to go Seixas stops for a quick rear wheel change.

151km to go Carapaz accelerates in his vibrant pink jersey to cowbell cheers, opening a six-second lead.

152km to go Break is absorbed amid position jostling.

153km to go The climb begins. Mohoric, Alaphilippe, Delbove, Turgis and Degenkolb lead by seven seconds.

160 km to go At 96km per hour the peloton descends the Cote des Rousses, a category three climb of 6.7km at 5.2 per cent.

David Sheidlower speculates: "Prior dominant riders used unique tactics. Pogacar and Del Toro's team may have developed an algorithm for real-time power meter adjustments. Pogacar's solo mountain power is legitimate if based on superior calculations."

162km to go An attack flares then fades. Mechanicals occur off the back, including Del Toro.

Philipsen wins the intermediate sprint

165km to go Philipsen crosses first, Pedersen second, Kanter third.

168km to go Calm before the sprint with 1.3km remaining. Alpecin controls the front.

Gwyn Williams notes amateur riders tackling the Etape du Tour on the same route as stage 20. Many ride for charity or passion despite time cutoffs on 170km with 5400m elevation. Pride goes to all participants, including his son Jack.

173km to go Lidl-Trek's Toms Skujins attacks briefly before Alpecin closes it.

174km to go Eight kilometres to the sprint. Alpecin leads in white, followed by Mads Pedersen and Lidl-Trek.

178 km to go Green trees and yellow fields frame the peloton's steady climb with bobbing helmets.

182km to go Alpecin blue jerseys lead, eyeing the intermediate sprint 17km in. Paul Seixas is the youngest TdF leader's jersey wearer.

Kilometre zero

No rain today as the flag waves and the race starts. The Alps await.

One km before the flag. Easy pace like lazy summer bees.

Tadej Pogacar comments: "Four hours sleep after controls, then chilling with old Eminem and coffee."

Ger Nugent emails first: "Pogacar's dominance intrigues me tactically. His athleticism merits respect."

The peloton departs Champagnole shortly, with kilometre zero at 12.20.

Doping control visited overnight - Pogacar at 5am, Vingegaard at 2am. Emails welcome on the Tour so far.

One minute 20 seconds separates Vingegaard in second from Del Toro in seventh, while Pogacar pulls away.
