News of Tottenham's recent group trip to Marbella prompted reflections on my own approaches as a manager to strengthen squad connections.

Although approaches have evolved since earlier times, the core goal of moving players to fresh surroundings for extended shared time remains unchanged.

I noted recently that Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi required pitch time after a shaky opening to the campaign to integrate and form a cohesive unit.

The warm weather base in southern Spain offered extra chances for that work, allowing him to connect with what amounts to a refreshed roster.

Given De Zerbi's Italian roots, the squad likely spent mornings and afternoons refining shape and tactics under his guidance.

Beyond drills, the break let him observe personalities away from the pitch.

If successful, the outing prepared them for Coventry while giving fresh insight into each player's traits both during and outside matches.

Some questioned the timing of the early season trip, yet it fits well with the influx of new arrivals, many signed late.

As Stoke manager I arranged similar Austria pre season stays for identical motives.

These outings checked fitness levels and revealed how the group interacted.

I always aimed to create family style unity in the dressing room, with each player committed to collective success.

The demanding challenges over ten days sparked determination and supported us in early Premier League struggles.

Seeing players connect during sessions and meals revealed much about their characters.

A couple lacked the needed qualities and moved on without issue.

Modern Premier League trips feature top hotels, facilities and meals, with extra staff buses trailing the team.

This differs sharply from my early playing days when Blackpool hosted three day pre season camps.

The aim stayed the same but the execution varied.

We shared guest house beds that forced closeness, ran on the beach each morning and cleared parks for afternoon games.

Evenings allowed beers with an early start required next day.

Drinking culture ran deep across leagues back then, even at elite clubs like Liverpool and United.

Bonding often occurred in pubs after matches or training.

Spain visits usually happened post season with more drinks involved.

British players then stayed grounded in everyday life rather than isolated.

Today managers seek fresh connection methods amid other influences.

Mobile phones stand out as a change I welcome avoiding, since they disrupt direct talks at meals.

Despite fewer luxuries, our era built lasting friendships and memories that I tried to recreate as a manager.

Other shifts include army style camps I once used, with cross country runs, tunnel swims and team tasks in Exmouth.

Mornings involved tough outdoor work while afternoons tested minds with practical exercises.

Nights meant basic bunk beds.

Players embraced the grit fully.

Later trips abroad grew more comfortable.

Irdning in Austria remains a top spot for its mountains and facilities including pools and a spa in a historic building.

Real Madrid once stayed there too, leading to a friendly after a hotel swap.

My first visit in 2004 came during ownership tensions at Stoke.

The squad featured strong characters who trained hard before seeking a rest day beer trip.

I allowed the bus outing but arranged a quiet route back to the hotel for oversight.

The group enjoyed themselves anyway and De Zerbi likely faced fewer such concerns.

Manchester City's Champions League clash with PSG stood out for its direct play and excitement.

Both sides pushed forward quickly and created chances throughout.

Young coaches could learn from that urgency.

City's off field issues also draw attention after the financial ruling.

Football overall suffers from the prolonged case and questions remain on timing.

The delay has left trophies under a cloud.
