Leaders switch places! Jackson Suber sends yet another birdie attempt six feet beyond the cup - his third such miss in the opening six holes - and fails to hole the return. Over on the second, his close friend Pierceson Coody drains a long-range effort, and suddenly the two debutant pals share the lead in the Open!

Sahith Theegala endured a shaky beginning today. The 28-year-old from California released his driver during the follow-through on his first tee shot, sending the club skittering across the box. Luckily the ball stayed in play on the right side, though he carded a bogey. He has since steadied with birdies at the fourth, fifth and now eighth. He sits at -1 overall.

A resilient figure refuses to fade. Padraig Harrington captured his second Open crown here back in 2008 - recall that five-wood to the heart of 17 for eagle on Sunday - yet at 54 expectations remain modest. An 80 yesterday left him last in the field at +10. He zigzags up the first from rough left to rough right. After hacking out he restricts the harm to bogey, then adds a textbook birdie on the second: fairway finder, wedge to eight feet, single putt. Back to +10, and with the cut line projected near +2 the veteran will miss the weekend, yet he battles on.

Birdie at the first for Pierceson Coody! Plus a recovery birdie at nine for Matt Wallace, who reaches the turn in a fine 31. Wallace capitalizes while the breeze stays light and favorable.

From limited footage, Jackson Suber moves briskly over his putts. Slowing slightly could help after another bold birdie try rolls six feet past on the fifth. He reacts quickly on the return and sinks the par save without delay. Clean and decisive, though the sample remains small, so avoid comparisons to JB Holmes just yet. He stands at -6.

Jackson Suber rightly drew attention for his debut 65. His friend and fellow first-timer Pierceson Coody also impressed with a 67. The 26-year-old Texan, grandson of 1971 Masters winner Charles Coody, is now out and sent his opening drive into semi-rough left of the first. Attention turns his way.

A setback for Matt Wallace. His tee shot at eight finds a grassy mound left of the fairway. Unable to reach the green, he wedges his third to eight feet yet the putt misses right, producing bogey. Suber also misses his birdie chance at four.

Jackson Suber sinks his second solid par save. This arrives at three after a 60-foot lag leaves him six feet short. He rolls the next putt into the center to stay at -6. Nerves appear controlled, and his tee shot at the par-three fourth finishes 13 feet away. All looks strong.

Colorful language from 2011 PGA champion Keegan Bradley. After driving into a large bush left of the first he takes a penalty drop. A bogey putt lips out, prompting strong words and a foot stamp. Sky Sports issues its standard pre-watershed apology. Commentators note Bradley has not recovered fully from last year's Ryder Cup captaincy disappointment. After a solid 69 yesterday he drops to +1.

Matt Wallace looks set for three straight birdies after his tee shot at the par-three seventh finishes 12 feet away. The putt misses on the low side. A strong chance to close on Jackson Suber slips away. He keeps frustration in check with a thin smile and stays at -4.

Matt Wallace keeps rolling! He drives past the dogleg right on the long par-four sixth, finds the green center and watches a 21-foot putt drop. Birdie on the day's toughest hole yesterday. A major gain.

An opening birdie for 2011 champion Darren Clarke. He moves to +2. Clarke jointly holds the record for most Open appearances by a champion before victory: 19, shared with Phil Mickelson. Nick Price follows on the list.

Birdie for Jackson Suber at two extends his lead! He pulled his drive left into rough yet found a good lie and wedged from 90 yards to 12 feet. A straight roll moves him to -6. Laurie Canter nearly aces the fourth, his ball finishing kick-in distance. The Englishman sits at -2.

A second birdie this morning for Matt Wallace. He lays up on the drivable par-four fifth and follows with a wedge to eight feet and a holed putt. Fast start and first notable leaderboard shift.

Suber wedges his second at one to 12 feet for a makeable putt. Slight left-to-right break. He strikes firmly through the line and faces a testing five-footer back, which he sinks to save par. A blend of steady and shaky strokes. He added 207 feet of putts yesterday and now another 22 feet seven inches.

If Suber feels nerves this morning his opening tee shot shows none. A confident strike finds the fairway middle. He plays alongside Sami Valimaki, the first Finnish PGA Tour winner last year at the RSM Classic. Valimaki turned 28 yesterday and heard the gallery sing Happy Birthday on 18. Suber called it pretty cool.

Suber enjoys discovering this side of the Atlantic. Never in Europe before, he has visited much of Latin America and Canada. He finds the UK awesome, the golf cool and the towns and train system impressive. Earlier this week he visited Liverpool with Pierceson Coody and partners. When asked why he avoids driving on the left he replied dryly: Because I am trying to make it here for four days.

Now the 18-hole leader Jackson Suber. Full name John Weatherington Suber III, 26, from Tampa, Florida, in his second PGA Tour season after Korn Ferry promotion. Best result is a tie for fourth at this year's Canadian Open that earned entry here. He missed the US Open cut and played his first links round only last Monday. Matt Wallace has not fully built on late-2010s promise when he won four European Tour events and tied third at the 2019 PGA Championship. The Londoner restarted momentum with a European Masters win and a PGA Tour alternate victory. At 36 he may yet bloom late. After a 69 yesterday he birdied the first this morning and sits at -2.
