Swansea Council has consented to transferring the Swansea.com Stadium to Swansea City, with the club noting that the move will protect its long-term prospects.

The Championship outfit has held talks with the council regarding the planned acquisition of the ground, which has served as its home since opening in 2005.

The local authority constructed the venue at a cost of 27 million pounds, and the Swans assumed operational responsibility in 2018.

Council leader Rob Stewart indicated that the sale price would exceed a fair open-market valuation.

A report presented to cabinet stated: "After extended discussions, terms have been provisionally settled that deliver a substantial purchase price along with further conditional payments tied to promotion, in addition to retained ticket and hospitality advantages."

The Swans believe acquiring the stadium will open avenues for greater revenue and fresh investment.

Labour councillor Stewart noted that the club's American owners, including investors such as Real Madrid and Croatia star Luka Modric plus hip-hop artist and entrepreneur Snoop Dogg, aim to return the team to the Premier League while upgrading the facility for an improved supporter experience.

"It proves challenging for them to achieve this without owning the asset," Stewart remarked.

Initially called the Liberty Stadium upon completion, the site offered a contemporary home for both the football club and the Ospreys rugby side.

Its 2005 launch aligned with a highly successful era for Swansea City that included seven seasons in the Premier League from 2011 to 2018.

Stewart explained that taxpayers received no rental income until lease terms changed in 2018, making the Swans the primary tenant and Ospreys the sub-tenant.

He added that while the council generally prefers to retain its assets, it concluded this sale was appropriate, and the authority would keep planning oversight for any future developments near the ground.

During the session, opposition leader Chris Holley sought clarification on how the sale would aid the Swans, especially on the pitch, and raised the possibility that the club might later use the stadium as collateral for borrowing.

"This represents a major asset held by the council and local residents, so further detail is required," he stated.

Stewart responded that ownership could boost investor confidence in the Swans, though he acknowledged he was not an authority on football club operations.

In comments made shortly before the council approved the sale, Swansea City chief executive Tom Gorringe observed: "This marks a pivotal point for Swansea City, as after more than twenty years at the Swansea.com Stadium we progress toward full ownership of the venue."

"Securing the Swansea.com Stadium offers significant strategic value to the club, and we anticipate finalizing the purchase soon."

Swansea has been the only occupant since Ospreys moved in 2025, temporarily basing itself in Bridgend during redevelopment work at St Helen's in southern Swansea.

The football club assumed management of the stadium eight years ago, describing the change as placing the team "firmly in control of its own destiny."

Yet Swansea has stated that purchasing the ground "makes sense operationally and financially" to hold the asset directly.

"This action will protect the club's future, and we thank council representatives for their support and professionalism in reaching this stage," the Swans noted in an earlier statement.
