Now the clouds release their load, sending players rushing off. Covers, hoses and buckets arrive promptly. Hampshire gained 61 runs in that period of play while losing two wickets.

After sixty minutes, Hampshire avoid total collapse. Gubbins and Lehmann opt to attack rather than defend. Meanwhile heavy clouds gather swiftly above the pavilion.

Yesterday's report

On a fresh green pitch at the Oval, Dan Lawrence enjoyed one of his dominant innings - a powerful assault on Hampshire. With sharp focus and aggressive strokeplay he scored 218 from 190 balls, claiming the first four Division One centuries of the season and his highest first-class total.

The Oval hosted Lawrence's initial first-class hundred, for Essex in April 2015 at age 17. Eleven years on, it witnessed his first double century, completed via a flawless inside-out drive over extra cover. Spectators stood throughout the ground, as they had for his 100 and 150, and would again at his dismissal with Surrey eight down, attempting one last six off Sonny Baker.

Lawrence received his county cap, a rare honor here, from director of cricket Alec Stewart at tea, having amassed 2,150 runs for Surrey.

This standalone Championship fixture, isolated due to scheduling, felt unusual. Yet Surrey's marketing invited day-four Lord's spectators, whose match ended early, to cross the Thames for a fiver with their ticket - and 250 accepted, swelling the crowd to 4,700.

Surrey fielded a revised lineup without England players and amid injuries including Ben Foakes, still sidelined after bowling late in the Essex draw in April. Bottom-placed Hampshire welcomed Baker back from Lord's.

The morning proved measured, with Hampshire removing Rory Burns and Will Jacks cheaply, and when Dom Sibley fell soon after lunch, bowling first appeared wise. But Lawrence and Ollie Pope (76) accelerated in a stand of 255 in 37 overs.

Adding to Hampshire's woes, Surrey gained five penalty runs when frustrated Delano Potgieter, struck for two fours by Lawrence, threw the ball back and hit the stumps.

Hampshire fought back with the new ball as Surrey lost six for 31, yet the harm was done. Nick Gubbins and Toby Albert lasted 5.2 overs before bad light ended play, but Lawrence dominated the day.
