Ex-England leader Ben Stokes has voiced his strong desire to coach the national side in the years ahead.

The 35-year-old, during his appearance on the For the Love of Cricket podcast, also noted his surprise that Harry Brook was not chosen to replace him as Test captain and voiced worries about the impact the role might have on Joe Root.

Stokes, who served as England Test captain from 2022, revealed his unexpected exit from international cricket in June during the final Test versus New Zealand.

The all-rounder stepped away weeks after sitting out the second Test against the same opponents due to an off-field matter in a London venue.

"I am completing my level three coaching badge while still active in the game, so that when my playing days end I can have everything in place," said Stokes.

"I know my goal is to remain involved in cricket as a coach. Would I like to guide England one day? Absolutely.

"I really enjoy the thought of holding a leadership position beyond my playing career."

England lost the series 2-1 to New Zealand after a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, leaving them without a Test series win since late 2024.

Stokes has dismissed any chance of returning for the 2027 Ashes and confirmed to former teammate Jos Buttler that his retirement is final.

England later named Root as Test captain rather than Brook, who had been elevated to vice-captain during the Ashes tour.

Brook faced an off-field issue in Wellington after being hit by a delivery the night before a white-ball match in New Zealand last November.

Root took the captaincy for the second Test against New Zealand and has now been handed the job on a permanent basis.

Stokes had supported Brook, who captains the white-ball teams, to follow him in the Test role.

"If you believe someone will make a strong captain or leader, then give them the chance," said Stokes.

"I understood the decision but wondered what signal it sent to him as vice-captain when the captain is absent yet he is not asked to lead."

Root previously led England in Tests from 2017 to 2022, securing a record 27 wins in 65 matches.

He will partner with new Test coach Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain.

Root resigned from his initial stint in April 2022 after a heavy loss to West Indies, having won just one of 17 Tests amid various pressures.

"I wish him every success and hope he achieves great things as captain," said Stokes.

"I told Joe my only concern is him, given what he endured before and how he always puts the team ahead of himself. I do not want to see that happen again because I care deeply for him."

Fleming took over from Brendon McCullum as Test coach after a run of poor results and off-field issues, though McCullum continues with the white-ball sides.

Stokes and McCullum denied any rift, stressing they remain on good terms despite occasional differing views.
