What connects these random items? None existed the last time the U.S. men's national team appeared that impressive at the World Cup.

Back then Bert Patenaude suited up for the Fall River Marksmen, a club not based in Fall River because Massachusetts still enforced blue laws that barred soccer on Sundays. Matches instead took place across the border in North Tiverton, Rhode Island. In 1930 Patenaude netted a hat trick in the USMNT's previous three-goal World Cup win, staged in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Interestingly it came against the same opponent that fell again on Friday when the United States defeated Paraguay behind two goals from Folarin Balogun.

Soccer novice, ex-pro, AYSO parent or the person born in Ohio who insists on saying footy: everyone noticed how dominant the U.S. appeared in its 4-1 opening win over Paraguay at the 2026 World Cup. For perspective that margin roughly equals a 20-point NBA victory or a 23-point NFL result.

Although it stands as a landmark in the long history of the U.S. men's team, how does the performance stack up against other commanding wins in recent World Cup editions? More crucially, what does one lopsided group-stage result usually reveal about a team's likely tournament depth?

How strong was the U.S. performance historically against Paraguay?

Despite the fluid nature of soccer, three core phases define success: territorial control, ball progression into threatening zones and chance creation.

Chance-creation dominance proves most predictive, and territorial plus box-penetration edges enhance repeatability. No group-stage exit among prior teams combined the full suite of dominance markers the U.S. displayed.

Eleven prior sides since 1998 combined an adjusted-goal edge above plus-1.3 with at least 60 percent field tilt and a plus-20 penalty-area touch advantage in an opening win. All advanced from the group, five reached the semifinals or better and eight reached the quarterfinals.

Opponent quality remains a variable, yet sides posting comparable opening dominance across goals, box entries and field control have advanced to at least the quarterfinals more than two-thirds of the time.
