NEW YORK - The Yankees intend to promote top prospect George Lombard Jr. to the big leagues on Tuesday after sending shortstop Anthony Volpe down to Triple-A, a source informed ESPN late Monday night.

The team also sent outfielder Jasson Dominguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Monday's 13-7 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals to clear space on the active roster for outfielder Heliot Ramos, acquired earlier that day from the San Francisco Giants.

Lombard, 21, began the year in Double-A and advanced to Triple-A by late April. He is hitting .268 with six home runs and an .845 OPS across 56 games at that level. After missing nearly a month due to a sprained left hand in mid-June, he has been productive in 14 games since returning, posting a .377 average and 1.081 OPS in 65 plate appearances.

Defensively, the Yankees have viewed Lombard as ready for the majors for some time. He is slated to handle shortstop duties in New York but has also started 11 games at third base this season.

The move to elevate Lombard follows general manager Brian Cashman telling reporters Monday that the club sought a shortstop before the trade deadline without finalizing a deal.

"We engaged everybody," Cashman said. "We tried to evaluate all opportunities in the marketplace. And, with that being said, I don't think there were a lot of opportunities that existed that were upgrades for us. We like the players we have and we like the players we have on the come."

Lombard's rise to the majors marks a fresh start at shortstop in the Bronx. Like Lombard, Volpe was the Yankees' top prospect when named Opening Day shortstop in 2023. Born in Manhattan and raised in New Jersey as a devoted Yankees fan, Volpe came with high hopes. He has not met them.

Volpe hit 21 home runs with 24 steals and earned a Gold Glove as a rookie, yet his output never advanced. His .660 career OPS ranks 155th among 158 hitters with at least 1,500 plate appearances since 2023.

He played much of last season with a torn labrum in his shoulder that was not disclosed until after the Yankees exited the playoffs, and he had arthroscopic surgery in October to fix the problem. Volpe started this season on the injured list. He was sent to Triple-A upon activation after a rehab stint on May 4. Eight days later, he returned to the majors and stayed until Monday night, sharing time at shortstop with Jose Caballero.

Volpe, 25, is batting .240 with one home run and a .646 OPS in 56 games this season. His defense has returned to elite status after notable decline last year, but the Yankees felt his bat did not justify keeping the promising Lombard in the minors.

Dominguez, another former top prospect, is batting .230 with six home runs and a .653 OPS this season, unable to seize the chance to play regularly while Aaron Judge was out. The switch-hitter started in Triple-A before his call-up in late April. He then missed over a month due to a shoulder injury from crashing into the wall at Yankee Stadium in early May.
