Securing her ranking position after only 10 matches since her return carries real weight for the 2027 campaign.

Kartal no longer requires a protected ranking to gain entry into events such as the Australian Open, allowing her more flexibility in scheduling matches while she carefully handles her playing load.

"My aim during the Asian swing was simply to protect the points earned from the previous year and ensure the protected ranking delivered value," noted Kartal, who also secured two victories at the China Open in Beijing.

"I believe I have exceeded those expectations. The target has been met this week and I find myself well placed for the remainder of this season and into the next."

Kartal's return comes at an opportune moment amid the wider context of British achievements on the global stage.

With Kartal missing from three of the four majors, no British women advanced beyond the second round at any Grand Slam event in 2026.

Kartal has achieved that feat only twice previously - reaching the third round at Wimbledon in 2024 and progressing one round further last year - yet demonstrated in Wuhan her capacity to compete effectively at the highest level.

She became the first British player to contest a WTA 1000 final since Johanna Konta in 2019 and, although defeated by the 22nd-ranked Chwalinska, still posted the strongest performance by a British woman since Emma Raducanu claimed the US Open crown in 2021.

Combined with Arthur Fery's remarkable progress to the Wimbledon semi-finals during the summer, this provides a welcome highlight for the country's tennis supporters.

How far might Kartal progress?

Like Fery, she lacks the height and power that many top players possess naturally, yet she possesses sufficient weapons to establish herself within the top 50.

In Wuhan, her steady baseline play, outstanding movement and calm approach proved central to her achievements.

Maintaining fitness in the months ahead will prove equally vital.

Kartal reports that the stress fracture in her back has fully recovered and her team confirm she "worked her socks off, 9-5 all the time" throughout rehabilitation to prepare for a strong return.

It was notable that Kartal promptly thanked her coach Ben Reeves, fitness coach Ian Aylward and physio Dani Gillanders upon receiving the runners-up trophy.

"Without them I would not be here," Kartal remarked.

"It adds to the occasion that the three individuals who supported my recovery and resolved my back problem are alongside me. This has been a memorable week for everyone involved."
