Socceroos forward Cristian Volpato has reportedly tested positive for cocaine following a traffic stop while driving well over the posted limit in Sydney.

Volpato emerged as one of Australia’s standout performers at the 2026 World Cup yet now faces renewed attention after allegedly operating a BMW Coupe at 109km/h inside a 60km/h zone on Anzac Bridge shortly after 1.10am on Friday.

The 22-year-old underwent a roadside drug test that allegedly indicated the presence of cocaine. Officers collected a second oral fluid sample for laboratory analysis, and NSW police stated that inquiries remain ongoing.

Volpato reportedly received an infringement notice for the speeding violation and saw his international driver’s licence suspended for six months, barring him from driving in New South Wales. No criminal charges have been laid.

Police allege Volpato was also pulled over two hours earlier on the same bridge west of Sydney’s CBD and issued another infringement notice after allegedly travelling more than 20km/h above the limit.

He submitted to a roadside breath test around 11.05pm Thursday that returned a negative result for alcohol.

Football Australia has been contacted for comment.

Volpato currently plays for Italian club Sassuolo and earlier represented Italy at under-19 and under-20 levels before switching allegiance to Australia just before the World Cup.

He featured three times for the Socceroos during the tournament, offering an attacking outlet as the team advanced from the group stage as runners-up before elimination by Egypt in the round of 32.

Born and raised in Sydney, Volpato began his junior career at Sydney United 58, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers before moving abroad to join Serie A side Roma.

After two seasons with Roma he transferred to Sassuolo, where he has netted seven goals across three campaigns, and has since established himself as an emerging talent for the national team.
