Smith has long been viewed as one of British boxing's top prospects, yet his triumph over Matias elevated him to the world stage and a strong first defence would reinforce his standing among the division's elite.

It might also unlock opportunities for bigger bouts. Shakur Stevenson holds the WBO title, while Russell is the WBA champion. The IBF title remains vacant.

A domestic rivalry is also taking shape with unbeaten Londoner Adam Azim.

Azim is 15-0 and has been discussed as a future world champion, but Smith has, for now, moved ahead of him through achievement by capturing a recognised world title.

If Azim reaches that level, a future all-British world-title fight could rank among the biggest contests for both fighters.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has previously discussed the chance of Smith eventually headlining at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough Stadium if his profile keeps rising, while Smith has mentioned wanting to create the kind of travelling support Ricky Hatton enjoyed at his peak.

Defeating a former champion of Puello's calibre on home soil would help reveal whether he can become one of British boxing's headline names.
