PHILADELPHIA - Bryce Harper decided to switch up his approach Saturday. He arrived early at the ballpark for extra batting practice and swapped to a heavier bat typically used only during workouts.

The adjustments paid off with his first cycle in the majors on a night when Philadelphia Phillies teammate Kyle Schwarber smashed three home runs, two in the same inning, during a 15-3 victory against the New York Mets.

Harper had been in a slump with just one hit over his previous seven games. He chose a 35-ounce bat he had owned for some time but never used in a contest and took early swings in the cage.

"I was trying to hit homers," Harper said. "Just trying to have some fun."

He delivered a solo home run in his opening at-bat against Mets starter Freddy Peralta. Harper followed with a double and single during the Phillies' eight-run third inning. In the fifth he raced from the batter's box on a liner to left-center, scoring ahead of the throw and sliding safely into third.

Harper recorded the 11th cycle in Phillies history and the first since Weston Wilson on Aug. 15, 2024. The triple marked only his eighth in eight seasons with the club.

"I got close a couple of times," Harper said. "But being able to do that and having that moment was really, really cool."

Harper went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He became the second player this season to hit for the cycle after the Chicago Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong accomplished the feat earlier in the week.

The Phillies' third-inning explosion featured Schwarber, who joined the list of 67 players to hit two home runs in one inning. He is the second to do so this season after the Houston Astros' Yordan Alvarez on June 12 and the fourth in franchise history alongside Trea Turner, Von Hayes and Andy Seminick.

"That was cool," Schwarber said. "First time I've done it in my career. I think it was a pretty cool overall night in general."

Schwarber opened the third with a 456-foot solo shot off Peralta into the second deck in right field. He later added a 457-foot three-run homer off Cionel Perez to nearly the same location.

Schwarber hit his league-leading 28th homer of the season in the seventh off Tobias Myers, a two-run drive inside the right-field foul pole. He finished 4-for-5 with six RBIs and four runs.

The Phillies became just the second team in MLB history to feature both a cycle and at least three homers in one game, matching the 1932 New York Yankees duo of Tony Lazzeri and Lou Gehrig.

"We were wondering that in the dugout," Harper said. "We didn't think there was going to be two guys that did it. But to have those two names up against ours is pretty cool. It's a pretty awesome moment."
