Chelsea captain Reece James faces a three-month absence after completing knee surgery this week.

The 26-year-old defender picked up the issue during a training session ahead of last weekend's 5-1 victory against Bournemouth, prompting the club to schedule the operation.

James has begun his recovery program alongside Chelsea's medical team, although officials have not provided an exact return date.

The Blues will next visit Everton in the Premier League, then host Tottenham and Manchester United in a challenging sequence of matches. A Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool sits between the two home games.

James has endured several injury setbacks in recent years, which have caused him to miss multiple England tournaments since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

His availability improved markedly last season, enabling him to feature regularly during England's World Cup run that ended with a semi-final appearance and a bronze-medal match victory.

James withdrew from the latest England squad during the recent international window. The following break starts in early November, with England due to meet Croatia at Wembley Stadium.

Manager Xabi Alonso, who has repositioned James as a full-time midfielder, ruled out any January transfer activity to cover the absence.

The 44-year-old Spaniard anticipates a return before the new year but stopped short of naming a precise timeline.

He said: "It is not going to be a two or three-week thing, it is going to be longer and after that we will see. Before Christmas, after Christmas, time will tell.

"Things have to be done properly so that he feels right and is in the best possible condition. It is a disappointment for everyone, for him, but we need to have a squad to deal with injuries.

"We support him, he will stay close to the team, he is a great influence even when he is not available, and we wish him the best recovery."

James is not the only absentee, as last season's vice-captain Enzo Fernandez completed a move to Manchester City in the summer for a joint-British record fee of £125m.

Alonso has handed the captain's armband to defender Levi Colwill for the past two Premier League fixtures against Brentford and Bournemouth.

He explained: "We have Moi, we have Levi, we have players who take responsibility and carry that role in a perfect way. They have the support from the rest and the players respect them when they wear the armband, so it is no bother.

"Their own personality. Each one is different. Levi is different from Reece, Moi is different, Cole, Hendo. Each one is different, Dibu (Emiliano Martinez) as well.

"That is why it is so important for me to have a mix of personalities, qualities and stages of their careers. I think we are in a good place in that way."

Alonso also confirmed that striker Emmanuel Emegha, who is yet to appear for Chelsea, is still not fit enough to face Everton on Saturday.
