Three of the established big six clubs now have new managers at the helm, the defending champions face a significant injury concern, and Tottenham along with Chelsea are shattering transfer spending benchmarks.

Following seasons of Manchester City supremacy and then Liverpool plus Arsenal claiming titles by margins of at least seven points, the Premier League appears ready for a wide open and unpredictable contest involving multiple clubs.

Here are four factors suggesting the 2026-27 campaign could deliver exactly that.

New managers bring fresh expectations

How does a club replace an irreplaceable figure?

Manchester City often enter the season as title favourites after securing six of the past nine Premier League crowns, yet they begin without their most successful manager, Pep Guardiola.

The 55-year-old delivered 17 major trophies during his decade at the club before departing at the end of last season, with former assistant Enzo Maresca stepping into the role.

Maresca had been without a position since resigning as Chelsea manager in January. The Blues themselves appointed Liam Rosenior to replace him at that time, but Rosenior departed before the campaign concluded, leaving Xabi Alonso in charge.

Alonso guided Bayer Leverkusen to an invincible Bundesliga title two years earlier, though his recent stint at Real Madrid proved challenging.

Many anticipated he would succeed 2024-25 champion Arne Slot at Liverpool, but the Reds instead chose Andoni Iraola, who led Bournemouth to sixth place last term.

That accounts for three major clubs with new leadership. In addition, Manchester United's Michael Carrick and Tottenham's Roberto de Zerbi assumed control midway through the previous season.

Consequently five of the traditional big six will start the new campaign under different managers than at the outset of last season. Only Arsenal's Mikel Arteta, appointed in 2019, remains in post.

Saliba absence could hinder Arsenal

As title holders with an experienced manager, Arsenal enter as favourites.

However a prolonged injury to a key player may impact their prospects.

The club confirmed defender William Saliba will miss an extended period following a back injury sustained while representing France at the World Cup.

Saliba, aged 25, featured in 50 matches across all competitions for Arsenal last season, and his strong partnership with Gabriel proved instrumental in the team conceding the fewest goals in the division.

Arsenal face a demanding opening, with Aston Villa and Chelsea among their first three fixtures.

Since Saliba's debut in 2022, Arsenal have secured 68.7 percent of Premier League matches when he played (131 games). That figure falls to 47.6 percent in his absence (21 games).

European commitments may affect Manchester United

Last season Manchester United contested just 40 matches in total, their lowest since 1914-15, and finished third.

Chelsea played 59 matches and ended 10th, while Tottenham featured in 52 and avoided relegation only on the final day, placing 17th.

Greater fixture loads do not always result in poorer league positions, as Arsenal demonstrated by winning the title while reaching both the Champions League and Carabao Cup finals.

Nevertheless fewer matches elsewhere allow greater rotation, fuller preparation weeks and reduced injury risk.

Spurs had 27 different players unavailable at some stage last season.

Next term Chelsea and Tottenham have no European football, whereas Manchester United and eight other Premier League sides do.

United have targeted midfield reinforcements, acquiring Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively.

Yet will these additions suffice to manage the increased demands?

Could Chelsea and Spurs emerge as surprise contenders?

Chelsea and Tottenham underperformed last season yet both may improve after major investment in the transfer market.

Chelsea secured England midfielder Morgan Rogers as the most expensive British player ever, signing him from Aston Villa for 117 million pounds.

They also spent 47 million pounds on full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta and near agreements for Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson and Maxence Lacroix.

Tottenham have nearly matched that outlay with a club-record 237 million pounds this summer.

In July Spurs broke their transfer record twice in successive days, first acquiring midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for 85 million pounds then Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for 100 million pounds.

They further added Jan Paul van Hecke for 52 million pounds from Brighton, plus Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson and Martin Dubravka.

With numerous new signings and altered management, outcomes remain uncertain.
