Patrick Mahomes is poised to become the first NFL player with a contract surpassing $500m after finalizing a new agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 30-year-old quarterback, who has steered the Chiefs to five Super Bowl appearances and three titles, has completed a two-year extension that raises his guaranteed earnings to $504.75m and commits him to the team until 2033.

His earlier 10-year pact was valued at approximately $450m, with potential for an extra $50m through incentives.

Reports show the new contract carries an average annual value of $64m beginning in 2027.

This tops the $60m per year arrangement reached in 2024 between the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott, which had set the prior mark for the league's highest-paid player.

"I'm just so excited to be here for life and to be a part of Chiefs kingdom for even longer," Mahomes said. "We have so much more to do. Let's go out and do it. Let's go win some more."

Mahomes suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during December of last year, leading the Chiefs to miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2014 season.

He directed the Chiefs to Super Bowl victories in 2020, 2023, and 2024 before they were denied a historic three-peat by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025.
