Ellie Kildunne, Helena Rowland, Meg Jones, Jade Shekells, Alex Matthews, Holly Aitchison, Natasha Hunt.

Even with Matthews, typically a back-row forward, shifted to an emergency wing spot, England fields a strong backline.

Six of the seven featured in the Red Roses World Cup final victory against Canada last year. Prior to that success, all seven competed at the highest level in sevens.

"Some of the world's top 15 players have emerged from sevens," says GB Sevens player Abbie Brown. "That Red Roses backline once formed our sevens squad.

"So, yes, it can be frustrating."

Brown's frustration does not stem from those former teammates now thriving in 15s. She takes pride in their accomplishments.

Rather, it arises because the program that shaped them has been reduced, downsized and deprioritized.

In July, Great Britain's full-time sevens setup was eliminated to cut costs. Instead of year-round training together, the men's and women's players now gather only for events.

When the change was revealed, concerns emerged that Britain's competitive edge against global rivals would suffer. Those worries have proven accurate. Clearly.

Both Great Britain's men's team, silver medalists at Rio 2016, and women's team, twice fourth at the Olympics, placed last in the eight-team top division of the Svns global series.

Next year, they will drop to the second tier alongside sides such as Belgium, Brazil and China.

"I think we had over 25 new caps across the year, over 60-odd people in and out of camps," says Brown.

"So when you look at the numbers and how much training we had, we just could not stay competitive with the world's best.

"We only had a handful of sessions before facing teams that have trained together for my entire career."

Brown, like her teammates, has needed to find new income sources while supporting her rugby.

Brown has taken on coaching and mentoring work. She holds a 15-a-side deal with Premiership Women's Rugby side Loughborough Lightning.

Yet she continues to seek sevens opportunities.

"We have not stopped training or doing all we can - if you love something, then you have to keep at it," Brown added.

"And sevens is exactly where I find my passion."

To pursue it, Brown traveled to India, where she captained the Mumbai Dreamers franchise in the country's Rugby Premier League this summer.

Her GB teammate Ellie Boatman has gone even farther, competing on Japan's domestic sevens circuit for the Mie Pearls.

A new option now exists closer to home.

Brown, 30, is one of the headline players for Ultimate Sevens, a new short-form sevens circuit launching in September.

It will feature four events in Madrid, Cardiff, Biarritz and London, with 10-minute knockout matches, optional timeouts instead of a standard half-time break, and six newly formed teams.

Tom Mitchell, who led Great Britain Sevens at two Olympics, serves as the event's sport and innovations director.

While R360, a proposed breakaway 15s series, stalled due to resistance from unions and lack of World Rugby approval, Mitchell seeks to add to the existing schedule rather than challenge it.

"At its core is a deep passion for helping the sport grow and succeed, because I know it can," he said.

"I am not claiming that Ultimate Sevens is the answer or savior of the sport. It is not about that.

"It is about us adding extra chances, both in playing time and financial support, for players and coaches.

"That might ease some pressure on the international programs as well."

Many of Brown and Boatman's Great Britain teammates are seizing the chance for top-level play nearby.

Fifteen colleagues, including Svns rookie of the year nominee Finley Lloyd-Gilmour, are joining them in Ultimate Sevens.

The advantage extends beyond Britain.

Australia's Maddison Levi and Argentina's Luciano Gonzalez join the international lineup, with the series ending at Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford on 24 September.

Will Jones, who co-captained Great Britain Sevens with Brown previously, attend to return the support her friend has shown during World Cup and Six Nations campaigns?

"Meg is definitely going to be there with a sign for you Abbie," says Mitchell.

"Even if she is training she will bring the crew down!"

"She had better - I will be having words if she does not!" says Brown.

Sevens continues to attract 15-a-side stars, even if now from the stands rather than the pitch.
