Tense talk and jittery vibes rise when a well-known chant breaks the noise.

Knicks in four.

The New York Knicks stand seconds from an NBA finals appearance for the first time in 27 years, the final obstacle in ending a championship wait dating to 1973. On this mild June evening, less than 10 miles of water, pavement and fencing from a Manhattan horizon glowing in orange and blue, the group here follows the identical contest gripping millions more in taverns, eateries, homes and public spots throughout the five boroughs.

For several hours, one of the nation most infamous jail sites and most overlooked places joins a civic tradition that has united New Yorkers in ways few public occasions have matched in years. The long-shot Knicks long-awaited appearance on basketball biggest stage offers those held at Rikers an uncommon chance to share a citywide event that will have them debating the same rulings, questioning the same choices and chasing the same goal absorbing the metropolis outside.

"The Knicks lack a roster of superstar talents," notes Luis Guzman, a 43-year-old from the Pelham Parkway area of the Bronx held at Rikers since September on a pending burglary matter. "Their bond and cooperation set them apart. This could finally be their season. Taking one in San Antonio seals it. We stay unbeatable at home. We simply need one victory here."

Guzman claims a front-row spot for the Wednesday contest inside the Beacon Center, a gathering zone featuring classrooms, a recording studio, a barbershop and workforce programs. He belongs to what staff call an "honors house," a unit for those free of violence or discipline issues for at least 120 days who show steady involvement in programs, earning snacks and later lock-in. Many watching have stayed violation-free for half a year or more.

The Guardian received permission to visit Rikers Island from the New York City department of correction and toured with the agency deputy commissioner for public information.

The good-behavior perk on Wednesday resembles a Super Bowl buffet more than everyday jail food: chip and cookie bags, fruit and cheese trays, bottled drinks and a large cake iced with three words uniting nearly all present for one night: Let us Go Knicks! Some items match commissary options, though a DOC employee observes the branded goods exceed typical movie-night quality. A tinsel curtain marks the doorway while leftover balloon-arch pieces dot the sealed floor.

Game 1 viewings on Rikers reach well past this single unit. Officials report people in about 44 housing units across the site join some form of gathering, involving nearly 2,000 individuals total. Certain buildings use program rooms such as the Peace Center in the Robert N Davoren Complex basement, a similar spot for males aged 21 and younger. At the Otis Bantum Correctional Center, another male unit a half mile away, viewers gather in a chapel.

Around 6,000 people remain in custody on Rikers Island, a 413-acre East River site between Queens and the Bronx north of LaGuardia Airport. Most await trial without conviction while others serve brief terms. For decades the name Rikers has symbolized the city vast and troubled jail network, aging buildings slated for closure and replacement by four new facilities by August 2027, though that timeline appears unlikely.

Yet on Wednesday night, for about a third of those held here, basketball briefly narrows the gap between the island and the city past the bridge.

"This is what the Knicks do!"

Quick exchanges bounce through the space during the tight first quarter, echoing a Bronx barbershop, Queens deli or busy Staten Island living room. Shouts emerge from Beacon Center doorways with growing force as the Knicks grab a 14-7 edge, yet the tone changes when they trail 27-17 and the broadcast shifts to star Jalen Brunson limping to the locker room with an injury.

"Typical Knicks move!" sighs John Shakespeare, a 44-year-old from Brooklyn detained since February awaiting trial. "Game over. That is why I follow the Liberty. I enjoy their mascot."

"They brought home a title," Guzman adds about the WNBA squad.

Most New Yorkers recognize Rikers only as a distant East River outline, low buildings seen from highways near LaGuardia yet removed from routine life. It operates like a small self-run city, complete with its power plant, kitchen producing roughly 7 million meals yearly and other systems supporting thousands daily.

Nearly everyone at the Beacon Center gathering is a lifelong Knicks supporter tracking each play. Richard Weems, a 44-year-old Harlem native held since October awaiting proceedings, stands apart. He favored the Spurs since the 1990s due to Tim Duncan and watches quietly from the front row with calm focus, marking each Victor Wembanyama play with a small fist pump and nod.

Thomas Gregory, 59, reached Rikers on an attempted weapon-possession charge nearly 15 months ago and still awaits case progress. A Knicks backer since the Walt Frazier era, he notes his trial was set for December yet hearing after hearing has passed. With another date next week, he discusses his outlook with irritation and acceptance.

"They delay it again and again," says Gregory, who usually spends Wednesday evenings in his unit playing chess or dominoes. "I sense nothing will happen."

Gregory returns to the action when a San Antonio player appears to travel: "He is taking the A train! How many steps will he get away with?"

Sports may appear trivial inside a jail long faulted for violence, neglect, misconduct, graft and harsh conditions. The typical person stays nearly four months, four times the national average. Four deaths have occurred in custody this year, including two within 24 hours last month, following over a dozen in 2025, nearly all health-related. An independent panel once labeled the site "a decaying, costly source of suffering," a mild description given its long record. Though leaders plan to swap Rikers for four smaller borough jails per City Council rules, the current administration has called the 2027 target "essentially unachievable."

For now those harsh facts recede and talk centers on basketball.

Chatter during breaks moves past the game. An iPhone ad sparks talk on smartphones versus basic phones and shortened focus among youth. A Disclosure Day trailer leads to lively debate on Steven Spielberg films. Reports of Donald Trump at Game 3 in Madison Square Garden draw laughs and grumbles.

"Oh, he wants in now?" Shakespeare remarks. "Now he claims local ties?"

Comments fly rapidly and no one is spared. When Mikal Bridges hits a jumper for a 40-39 Knicks lead, cameras catch celebrity fan Timothee Chalamet cheering courtside.

Guzman shakes his head.

"Nights like this tell people in our care we are not the judge or jury," Richards tells the Guardian at halftime with the Spurs ahead by seven. "We do not decide arrivals or departures, yet we shape how we treat those who enter our care."

His role arrives at a key time for Rikers. The complex has faced federal oversight for a decade, and last year a federal judge named an independent remediation manager with broad powers after ruling the city fell short on reducing violence and improving conditions.

The rare setup requires Richards to run the nation second-largest jail system while sharing power with a court-appointed receiver tasked with speeding reforms. He also guides the city delayed plan to close Rikers and build replacements gradually. This included the April launch of a jail unit at Bellevue hospital for over 100 people with serious medical or mental health needs previously held at Rikers.

Inside a Beacon Center viewing room as officers distribute cake and drinks in the third quarter, Richards says small gestures carry more weight than many realize.

"Our role includes seeing the best in people before they recognize it themselves," Richards says. "We maintain that vision of their potential until they accept it too. That means judging no one solely by their worst act. It means avoiding a lifelong mark. It means treating people as we would want our own relatives treated."

"The whole of New York is stressed right now"

Even as San Antonio extends its lead to 14 midway through the third and worry spreads, sound levels in the unit stay high. Yet as Richards follows the game beside the George R Vierno Center men with ongoing remarks, the Knicks rally with a 22-9 run to end the period and tie the score at 76 entering the fourth.
