Wales have reached Argentina to extend nearly 60 years of encounters against the Pumas on their home turf.

Eight years have passed since Wales last toured South America, yet this remains a short stop with one Nations Championship fixture in San Juan before Steve Tandy's squad proceeds to Durban to meet South Africa.

Wales have not previously undertaken the 7,000-mile journey for a solitary match on these shores, arriving via two separate flights.

Numerous dramatic moments and notable events have marked earlier Welsh visits to Buenos Aires and other locations.

Fifty-eight years have elapsed since Wales first visited South America, when the Pumas surprised the touring party by claiming the series via one win and one draw.

The six-match journey under coach Clive Rowlands yielded three victories, two draws and one loss.

For Phil Bennett and JPR Williams the tour marked the beginning of notable careers, while for others 1968 offered their sole opportunity to wear the Welsh jersey.

At the time the two matches lacked official status from the Welsh Rugby Union, but they later received Test recognition when seven players gained president's caps in 2013.

Thirty-one years would pass before Wales returned to South America.

Graham Henry's group made history as the first northern hemisphere team to achieve a 2-0 Test series victory over the Pumas in Argentina.

Both contests took place in Buenos Aires, where Wales triumphed 36-26 and 23-16, contributing to a ten-match winning run under Henry.

Neil Jenkins added 18 points in the second Test, moving him beyond 800 international points.

The encounter is also recalled for one of the most notorious brawls in Welsh rugby.

It began on the field and spilled into the bench area after Argentina prop Mauricio Reggiardo struck Wales wing Dafydd James, drawing players from both teams into the clash.

Reggiardo, Argentine captain Pedro Sporleder and Wales prop Peter Rogers each received yellow cards, yet no player was dismissed.

Tensions lingered into the 1999 World Cup opener in Cardiff, where Wales hooker Garin Jenkins suffered an eye gouge and flanker Colin Charvis received a two-game ban for retaliation.

Similarities exist between the 2004 tour and the current squad's schedule 22 years later, with Wales facing Argentina and South Africa on one journey.

In June, Mike Ruddock began his first Wales tour by meeting the Pumas in a two-Test series in Buenos Aires.

Wales fell in the first match 50-44 in a high-scoring 94-point thriller featuring 11 tries, with Felipe Contepomi, now Argentina coach, posting 20 points, one more than Wales' Gavin Henson.

The visitors responded seven days later with a 35-20 victory, highlighted by Shane Williams' first-half hat-trick and 15 points from Henson.

Following the series level, Wales faced a demanding trip across five time zones to confront South Africa at altitude in Pretoria.

The result was a 53-18 defeat.

Wales lost both Tests in Argentina in 2006, the opening games under new head coach Gareth Jenkins, appointed to succeed Ruddock in April that year.

The first Test occurred in Puerto Madryn, a city central to the former Welsh colony of Patagonia established by settlers from Wales in 1865.

The Pumas edged a 27-25 win, marking the international debut of lock Alun Wyn Jones, who played at flanker that day. Jones would later become the world's most capped player.

His Ospreys teammate Ian Evans enjoyed a memorable tour, scoring a fine try in the first Test via a 45-metre interception run after taking an Agustin Pichot pass.

A week later in Buenos Aires, Evans was cited and banned for six weeks after a reckless charge on Pichot during a 45-27 loss.

Wales repeated the two-Test success of 1999 when Warren Gatland led his side to Argentina in 2018.

Before the series Wales met South Africa in a one-off Test in Washington DC, Rassie Erasmus' first game in charge of the Springboks.

Gatland selected a squad without many players from the 2017 British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand, with co-captains Ellis Jenkins and Cory Hill leading the party.

Wales won the opening Test in San Juan, the venue for this summer's first match.

A 23-10 victory featured tries from flanker James Davies and wing George North, plus points from Rhys Patchell's boot.

Patchell's 20 points in the second Test in Santa Fe helped secure a 30-12 win with tries from Josh Adams and Hallam Amos.

The sole downside was a late red card for number eight Ross Moriarty, dismissed for a prolonged headlock on Pumas outside-half Nicolas Sanchez.

The series win elevated Wales to third in the world rankings and provided the foundation for Gatland's 14-match winning streak that briefly placed them top, delivered the 2019 Grand Slam and reached the 2019 World Cup semi-finals in Japan.

Wales were scheduled to visit Argentina in 2021 but the matches moved to Cardiff due to Covid, with the Pumas winning one and drawing the other.
