Pierre Gasly has reclaimed third spot in the Monaco Grand Prix after his Alpine squad won an appeal against penalties issued for exceeding the pit-lane speed limit.

The French racer had fallen to seventh on the final classification following two separate five-second time penalties applied after the event.

He formed part of a group of five drivers hit with sanctions for the same infringement during an event that saw an unusually large number of such calls.

A right-of-review session initiated by Alpine revealed that vehicles could cover a reduced distance through the pit lane compared with the measurement previously applied by officials.

The stewards agreed with Alpine's evidence and supporting data showing that Gasly had stayed within the 60 km/h threshold at all times.

The outcome affects Mercedes driver George Russell, who received a drive-through penalty for the same reason and slipped from third during the race to 13th at the chequered flag.

Russell's team along with the squads of the remaining penalised drivers accepted the original rulings despite holding the view that their drivers had not breached the limit.

Team principal Toto Wolff indicated Mercedes were examining possible remedies through the FIA regarding the effect on Russell's title bid, while noting constraints around timing and regulations.

Wolff remarked: "We just left when we were on the phone to our lawyers. A drive-through is equivalent of 20 seconds of race time. What would that have done to his result? Do I think we have a chance to reverse the result? I don't think so, but we definitely have to give it a go."

Gasly was found to have committed two separate breaches. The additional drivers penalised alongside Russell included McLaren's Oscar Piastri, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Gasly's teammate Franco Colapinto.

Hamilton's penalty left his second-place result intact because Ferrari served it during a safety-car period without losing track position.

Piastri, now pushed down to fifth by Gasly's reinstatement, dropped three places while serving his own penalty.

The stewards' published verdict on the review noted they had queried the volume of speeding penalties after the third instance arose.

The statement added: "Race control promptly came back to the stewards stating it had made enquiries of the official timekeepers and was told that there was no issue and that the data was therefore accurate."

Pit-lane speed is assessed via timing loops that record the duration taken to cover a set distance inside the lane.

The report highlighted that modifications to the pit lane this season had shortened the minimum route between the loops by 77 centimetres relative to the distance used for calculations.

Five of the six recorded breaches involved cars measured at just 0.1 km/h above the limit, while the remaining case, one of Gasly's, showed 0.4 km/h over.

Consequently the stewards concluded Gasly had not exceeded the pit-lane speed limit.

McLaren and Red Bull have indicated plans to challenge the latest decision.
