Lewis Hamilton anticipates the Monaco Grand Prix with enthusiasm this weekend.

"This is the circuit where engine power loses its dominance," the Ferrari driver observes. "It comes down to overall car capability. Our machine could perform strongly here."

Yet Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc are far from alone in their optimism for the weekend. Nearly all drivers share similar excitement because the distinctive layout of Monaco promises a race unlike others this season. There is even a slim chance the event's own character could evolve.

During qualifying, drivers foresee the chance to push to the absolute limit throughout, something they have struggled to achieve with this year's cars. In the race itself, some believe overtaking could become feasible under specific conditions, though one senior official cautions that "ultimately it remains Monaco, so passing will stay rare."

Both aspects deserve closer inspection to understand potential shifts at Monaco.

Monaco has earned a reputation lately for dull contests where the leader sets a controlled tempo to protect the win, aware that passing is nearly impossible.

Last year's 78-lap event featured only four overtakes overall. Across the 24 grands prix in 2025, excluding sprints, the average stood at 66.9.

Formula 1 has adopted a fresh style this season marked by higher overtaking rates and prolonged wheel-to-wheel duels that see positions exchanged multiple times.

Might these traits alter the essence of the race where passing proves hardest?

On paper, some grounds exist for modest optimism.

Drivers have noted in recent seasons that the cars proved too large, both in length and width, to allow effective racing through Monaco's confined streets.

However, the modest reductions in weight and size this year are unlikely to produce meaningful change.

Although the 2026 cars measure 10cm narrower and a touch shorter, they remain 10cm wider than those from two decades ago. Passing between evenly matched cars has been virtually impossible at Monaco for at least 50 years.

The real potential for change lies with the new power units, featuring a nominal 50-50 balance of combustion and electric power, plus the fresh overtake system.

The overtake function supplies an extra 0.5MJ of electrical energy per lap to any driver within one second of the car ahead. This feature drives the new racing style this season, producing the repeated back-and-forth battles many describe as "yo-yo racing."

Cars often remain locked together for several laps as the trailing driver uses overtake mode to pass, only for the advantage to swing back when the overtaken car gains the mode.

Breaking free from such exchanges has proved challenging, and every race this year has shown examples.

No one can predict exactly how overtake mode will influence Monaco until Sunday. Yet if it enables drivers to reach a passing position, it will likely require an added tyre-wear difference.

Should the leading car suffer rear tyre degradation and lose grip on acceleration, overtake mode might create a genuine opening.

Even so, Monaco's layout will limit certain elements of the mode.

Many overtakes this season have stemmed from the two cars operating in different energy states.

The extra energy from overtake mode lets the car behind sustain electric power longer than the leader.

With an added 350kW, or 480bhp, the trailing car often passes. This dynamic prompted two-time champion Fernando Alonso to label many moves "avoidance actions."

Max Verstappen has voiced a similar view in his own terms.

The issue arises because this year's cars lack sufficient energy recovery to maintain full power whenever drivers desire.

Monaco, however, is the track least affected by energy shortages. Power differences will therefore appear far less often.

Qualifying highlights the new cars' main limitation: energy shortages.

At Monaco, unlike most venues this year, the cars will enjoy energy abundance. The abundance of corners and scarcity of straights make energy recovery easier while reducing opportunities to expend it.

Recovery will occur naturally through braking rather than artificial methods on straights, allowing drivers full power throughout a qualifying lap for the first time this season.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, whose team marks its 1,000th grand prix this weekend, remarked: "We should have full power available everywhere, or very nearly so on the straights, which is welcome."

Leclerc, who has started from pole at Monaco three times in the past six years and never lower than third, added: "Monaco could suit these cars well. The lighter weight is noticeable and helpful, especially here. The electric component will matter less because we will recover energy readily through the many corners. I am looking forward to it."

The FIA is introducing safety-related adjustments to car settings.

Straight-line mode, which opens the wings on straights for higher speed, will be switched off.

Full 350kW electric deployment will also be capped at 200km/h before a gradual reduction begins.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella nevertheless believes: "Monaco will reduce the energy-shortage problems seen elsewhere. Racing should feel more conventional, though managing the high power levels through the streets will bring its own demands on tyres, the car and the drivers. It promises to be intriguing."
