Major League Baseball released a statement expressing disapproval toward players who added Bible verses to their Pride Night caps following an event during a San Francisco Giants game last week.

MLB observes Pride month each June, with most clubs selecting a home contest to recognize the LGBTQ community along with its baseball supporters. The Giants, located in a city known for its substantial LGBTQ population, frequently go above and beyond in their efforts.

Nevertheless, these initiatives sometimes conflict with the league's athletes, many of whom hail from traditional, faith-based upbringings. In Friday's matchup versus the Chicago Cubs, Giants pitchers Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker inscribed Bible verses on their Pride caps. A third Giants pitcher, Sam Hentges, opted to skip wearing the cap entirely.

On Monday, MLB provided a statement regarding the matter. "The writing on the cap breaks our regulations, and in line with standard procedure, we have cautioned the players regarding potential future infractions," stated MLB chief communications officer Pat Courtney.

Roupp placed "Gen 9:12-16" on his cap. This passage includes a mention of a rainbow, a key emblem of Pride. The text states in part: "Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the Earth."

He clarified that his choice to write on the cap was not intended with ill will.

"There is no animosity whatsoever. It simply reflects what I believe in and what I rely upon: my faith in God," he remarked. "It concerns God's covenant and the assurance he provides us regarding his loyalty and compassion. That represents something I hold dear and stand by firmly. I am grateful to reside in a nation where we possess the liberty to hold and voice our beliefs."

Hentges indicated he disliked being instructed to don the cap.

"It feels like I was compelled to endorse something I do not morally agree with. There was no ill intent involved. I believe that aspect is often misunderstood," he explained. "I hold no animosity toward the LGBTQ community. It is merely a personal conviction I discussed with teammates and family, who backed my decision."

Giants manager Tony Vitello noted that his players "possess the liberty to act according to their own judgment." Yet he also mentioned: "the Giants organization demonstrates remarkable dedication in welcoming the full community. We aim to avoid division, though distinctions can be made in specific areas, if that makes sense."

The Giants affirmed their ongoing dedication to Pride Night.

"The San Francisco Giants are proud to support Pride Night and the LGBTQ+ community. Baseball should be a place where everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued. We also respect that individuals may make personal choices about participating in team activations," the team said in a statement on Saturday.

"We understand that the choices by individual players have caused pain and anger to many in the LGBTQ+ community and we are sorry for that. Those choices do not change our organization's commitment to inclusion, belonging, and creating a welcoming environment for all. We remain grateful to our fans, partners, employees, players, and coaches who help make Pride Night a meaningful celebration."
